DS farts!

Sorry to lower the tone all, but I need advice. My 4 yr old is incredibly windy! He farts all the time, really loudly and often very smellily (if that's a word). It didn't used to bother me much, but now he's started school and I worry what the other kids will say and think. He, like most 4 yr olds i guess, just thinks it's funny! He's had some problems in the past with bowel movements - went through a long period of being scared to poo and even now will only poo on the potty not in the loo. His poos are always massive too.
I really don't want to make a big deal of this in front of him, but has anyone got any advice - dietary, medical ??

What's his diet like? Is there any chance that it's diet-related, do you think?

have you tried cutting out gluten .. it might be an intolerance

as an aside how is he going to manage at school if he only poos on a potty?

Twiglett · 20/11/2005 21:27

actually totally ignore that .. I don't know why i settled on gluten (its one of the more common intolerances though)

maybe you should consult your GP if it really is a problem .. but only if that is his whole digestive system giving him problems

I had wondered about diet - I have a minor wheat intolerance, which he could have inherited. His brother is allergic to dairy. I think I'll try cutting down on bread and see if that has an effect.
I know what you mean about school and pooing - it worries me a bit too. But he's only doing half days until Easter and never goes in the mornings, so think we're safe! To be honest, we had such a horrible year when he was scared to go and withholding his poo, that we're not making a big deal about the potty - just delighted that he's going without any fuss.
