Nits again, sorry ! Can't seem to get them out with the Nitty Gritty comb.

Just found some nits on DD, not many but definitely nits, so I've got out the Nitty Gritty comb I got when we had the last letter home about them in anticipation of the inevitable. I thought the whole point of the Nitty Gritty comb was that they did remove the eggs. These are tiny and don't seem to be moving. Is there a nack to using it or something ?

The eggs are implanted into the scalp. Olive oil is supposed to soften them but you have to leave it on for hours. It also suffocates the lice.

I hadn't noticed the Nitty Gritty comb taking out eggs, but it is superb for getting the lice out. I'm not so bothered about eggs because half of them are empty cases anyway. I prefer to concentrate on the hatched beasties.

I hate headlice so much.

I can tell this is going to be a great afternoon, not ! DD has got sensory issues and is going to freak when I start combing properly in a minute. Just found on the website that if the egg doesn't come out to keep combing from different angles. I haven't found any lice yet but no doubt will shortly. So if I stick some olive oil on with some neem oil and tea tree in and leave it on for a bit will that do the trick if it's in the early stages or am I deluding myself ?

The eggs are the hardest things to shift. They are stuck to the shaft of the hair with a compound that sticks like super glue!

You don't have to get the eggs sacs out, once empty they don't do anything.

If you want to get the out, it is best to do it by pulling conditioner on wet har. Slide the eggs sac off the hair using your finger nails, you will have to slide it up towards the end of the hair, at which point it will come off

You have to comb the lice out, I'm afraid. they can hold their breath longer than any other living animal, so 'somothering' them in oil doesn't kill them, but it does make it easier to comb them out. They also don't move if wet, so it make it easier to comb them out

I've combed through every millimetre of her head and not found any lice, just eggs at the top of the hair shaft which I think are the unhatched ones aren't they ? Does this mean I haven't been thorough enough or could it really have been just one which has now died, vanished or something ?

You could have missed some, but you do sound to have done a good job! Sometimes the female louse dies because they get stuck to the egg they are cementing to the hair shaft!

If the nits (egg sacs) are brown they will hatch and give you baby nits. They will shed their coats three times and will not be able to lay eggs until mature. If you comb you will get them out before they can start all over again

Thanks MB, think I know more what I'm doing a bit more now. All the ones I found were brown and they weren't there a few days ago when I looked so I'm hoping I've caught it early and will keep on combing. Can definitely think of better ways of spending a Saturday afternoon !
