Contact Lenses query...

I have worn contact lenses for well over ten years now.. started off with Specsavers monthly disposables, then a couple of years ago, when I had a small corneal ulcer, the opitician advised I either stop wearing them (!!!!! Not bloody likely! !!) or go onto daily disposables. So, at double the price, I did so.

Today I had a bi-annual full eye check and she commented on my red left eye. I hadn't noticed it felt sore and told her my eyes are often a bit red as I am always so tried (sleep deprived.) She checked it out extra throughly (with yellow dye etc) and said the blood vessels are a bit big and my eye is 'not very happy', which indicated that there is not enough oxygen getting to my eyes, especially since I wear my lenses constantly except when asleep. (6.45am until midnight or 1am approx!). So she has told me to go for a contact lense check at the first available opportunity (Wednesday!!!!) and to WEAR MY GLASSES UNTIL THEN!!

Obviously, I am doing as I am told as won't compromise my eye health depsite my serious aversion to glasses (it's not just vanity.. really!.. it's that I HATE the feel of glasses.. always have.. and the feeling now, after a decade of contact lense wearing, of not having 20/20 vision - ie not being able to see 'round the edges' actually makes me feel quite disorientated!

I asked what would be the effects, theoretically, of ignoring her advice and she said the blood vessels would grow more and grow over the cornea towards the pupil! And that this would affect my vision.

She said I can have a new kind of lense.. actually cheaper than the daily disposables, that allows oxygen to pass through much better. Although these come with solutions etc again which I hadn't had to deal with since getting rid of the monthly disposables. But I can't get these until my appointment for the lense check obviously.

Has anyone else had this kind of problem with their contact lenses?

hello, hello fellow sufferers

i went to specsavers for my contact lense check on Monday, was rebuked for wearing my contacts all the time and told I have an eye infection so have to wear my glasses.

so glad you understand how awful it is to go back to glasses. mine are so old, and have mould round the edges - no way could I wear them for the next fortnight so i bought new glasses yesterday, only to be told they could take a week to come in. Cost around £200!!!

my glasses are terrible. hair won't sit. aaargh!

Tassis SNAP!!! Thank goodness I got my new lenses yesterday and they are back insitu! Ah what a relief! My hair is resisding in its correct position once again!

Re earlier discussion, they are not gas permeables but are monthly disposables made of a new material which lets 70% more oxygen in. They feel fine.. are bit more rigid that dailies but I have had monthlies before so I am used to handling them and the feel of them (can't really feel them at all.)

The cleaning solution is no trouble either.. there is no rubbing them clean, you just put them straight in the pot and fill with a hydrogen peroxide solution (!) which gets neutralised by a special disc thing in the bottom of the pot. They HAVE to be in the pot for 6 - 8 hours or else there is not enough time for the bleach to neutralise. I put them in this morning with no probs and they were onlu in the pot for about 6.5 hours.

They are £13 a month - so £10 cheaper than the dailies I was wearing!

I asked about Ortho K's but as feared, Specsavers are not going to have these any time soon - if ever! - as they require such specialist checks and equipment whereas Specsavers is a very cheap n cheerful outfit!

Ordered new glasses too as I intend to be better with taking my lenses out in the evening now. Mine will be a week too.. they were only £59 (I only had to pay a tenner because I am entitled to an NHS voucher) but I like them! They are purple!!!

Jess, I highly recommend laser eye surgery. What is your prescription and where do you live?

JESSnutsRoastinOnAnOpenFire · 24/11/2005 23:54

Hi Chicpea, -4.75 and Kent.. but there is no way I can afford laser surgery. Nice thought though!

Jess, I might be able to arrange something for you. Which is nearer: NW London, Croydon or Ipswich?
