Any miracle cures for chronic nappy rash ?

WSM · 07/10/2003 09:49

DD is 14 months old tomorrow, she is and always has been a disposables wearer. We've never had any nappy rash problems before apart from the odd little red spot when she had a particularly mean tooth coming through. Over the last couple of days her bottom has become very sore, inflamed and is red raw. It is all over her genitals and goes right up to the top of her bum crack. The poor little mite also has diarrhoea and I am now having to change upwards of 8 nappies a day!

We have never used wipes on her as she is very sensitive to them and they bring her skin out in a tight red rash (though we have tried her with them at reg intervals). She screams in pain when I wash her bottom with plain lukewarm water and cotton wool, no matter how gentle I try to be . I pat her dry with a towel and apply metanium ointment to her skin, covering the rash, and out a clean napy on her. We usually use sudocrem but metanium seems to be a thicker more effective barrier against the nasties in her nappy. The rash itself is tight, red, dimply and raw in places.

I'm pretty sure that the rash is due to her cutting her last set of teeth. Does anyone know of a miracle cure ???

Thanks

as others have said - my dd had terrible nappy rash when in hospital for a number of reasons - to the point her bum was raw and bleeding. Washing with cool water and cloth, patting dry and then mixing sudocrem and metanium together ( i just did them in a little container and then sealed it ready for use) and using it on the rash cleared it up in no time.

The mix of metanium and sudorcrem was brilliant as the metanium can be a bugger to clean off.

Manuka honey and cornflour - makes a devil of a mess, but really clears it up. Manuka is called tea tree elsewhere - not sure if you can get the honey in the UK. It's expensive - but what you don't use you can always put on your toast.

tinyfeet · 07/10/2003 20:37

If possible, try not to use anything on her bottom when you clean her - just put her under the sink and have the water run on her bottom. Then, if you can be a bit patient, let her bottom air dry before you put the cream on. I don't know if you can get it in the UK, but we have used 1% hydrocortisone here in the US, and that has cleared up an evil nappy rash in just 24 hours. Good luck!

Hi tinyfeet. Thanks for the advice. I don't use anything other than clean, lukewarm water and cotton wool on her bottom anyway (even when she is rash free) as she has very sensitive skin.

For the last few days I have been religiously applying the creams, changing the nappies as soon as they are soiled etc etc and things seem to be improving. Sorry to hear about your little DS Gem, hope things improve with the change in milk.

Thanks all

Rice Milk is delicious also if the goat's milk doesn't work out. They have something here called Rice Dream by a company called Imagine. We buy the vanilla (and my DD is 9 now)-we have been using it for years. I alsohad my DD on soy as she had colic and problems with cow formula. Good luck with diaper rash WSM--try the oatmeal bath, it is fun for them too!

Gem13 · 09/10/2003 16:39

Thanks for that sunchowder. We do have rice dream here too so I may give that a go. Goat's milk seems to be going down ok though and it could work out cheaper than cow's milk as he isn't guzzling such vast amounts!

His 'nappy rash' is a lot better. His stomach seems to have calmed down (change in milk? reduction of fruit?) and the ointment we were prescribed seems to be reducing the redness and size of the sores.

Hope DD is better WSM.

Gem13, Robinw wants to be sure that everyone knows that there was a famous case of a child that died of malnutition when fed Rice Milk as a subsitution for cow's milk or breast milk. Apparently when I made a recommendation for the rice milk possibly on this thread and another, it was irritating for her as I was giving advice "or misinformation" that might be harmful to your child. Please understand I would never want to harm anyone's child and felt compelled to post this follow-up.

Hi,i have 3 kids who sufferd from very bad nappy rash (teething rash)I went through the same ritual of washing with plain water after each poo this was up to 10 times a day,i used numerous creams and lotions, wich didnt do much to cure the problem. After doing some reading on the net i tried a product called covitol, it has zinc and cod liver oil in it. This cream started to make the rash dissapear within 1/2 a day.

Hope this helps

BettieP · 09/03/2009 14:45

Thanks Bobsmum for chamomile tea recipe. My daughter has had diarrhoea on and off for last few days (related to teething we think) and even though we've been using creams and leaving her nappy off as much as humanly possible, the nappy rash got really bad. We put a muslin soaked in chamomile tea inside her disposable nappy last night and we couldn't believe the difference this morning. Hopefully another night and it will be gone. To everyone else with this problem, this is a brilliant treatment and cost effective too!
Thanks again!

I swear by tiny troubles healing salve by Mama Nature. This was recommended to me by my friend Jane after I broke down crying one day at the baby and toddlers group. She asked me what was wrong and I told her that my baby daughter's nappy rash was getting out of control. I would recommend this to anyone. It's not cheap but it's well worth it. Hope this helps!

My choice of nappy rash cream was Fullers Earth. My 2 DC's had bad nappy rash (think of a 6mo's bum all red, raw and on the verge of becoming a weeping mess) and even trying and spending a small fortune on the likes of Bepanthen, Metanium, sudocrem, other nappy rash creams and creams prescribed by our surgery and none worked. My MIL's old next-door neighbour suggested the Fullers Earth so I tried it and within 4 days their nappy rash went from the weeping mess stage to completely healed. MAGIC

monkeycat · 15/01/2012 00:16

DD2 has sensitive skin and sufferered badly when in nappies . The best creams have zinc oxide in them i think . It was a few years ago now so my memory is hazy , but we had a good one by a company called 'Real Earth' or something along those lines , i think it had red clover in it , as well as zinc oxide . You can get it in John Lewis and quite a lot of other shops .

Another thing that you could try , if your DD is not allergic to eggs , is egg white .
You just spread the egg white on the sore area and it forms an airtight protective layer and heals it too. My health visitor said that years ago they used to use egg white in hospital on bed sores.

Hope this helps. Nappy rash is no fun for anyone .

FlyingTeapot · 15/01/2012 01:47

This thread is 9 years old! How old is mumsnet now?

AmberLeaf · 15/01/2012 02:29

I second Fullers earth, you can also get it in the powder form and use it like a talc, it dries up a 'wet' sore bum V quickly.

It is magic!

RumpledTitSkin · 15/01/2012 08:55

I had this with dd1 when she was tiny. I'd been using water and no cream as I was told but it got worse and worse and eventually infected.

Trip to the docs to make sure it isn't infected I would suggest.

The things that worked for me were, believe it or not, changing to e45 or simple wipes rather than warm water and cotton wool, using corn starch to dry the area then sudocrem.

Pampers nappies or any other wipes always caused it to come back with her.

It is awful as it is so painful for them when they wee, hope you get it sorted soon.

RumpledTitSkin · 15/01/2012 08:57

Blimey, why am I responding to a thread from 2003?

Must pay more attention. Blush

FlyingTeapot · 15/01/2012 09:30

Well, the experience of mums won't have changed, so no harm done. Is it illegal to use old ones btw?, I should read the rules some time, myself

pipsicles · 29/07/2012 18:14

Well, all the above has been useful to me - regardless of how old the information is! Thanks ladies and I'm hoping that something will help!

tb · 30/07/2012 16:27

We used to use Helgason's nappy rash cream when dd got really bad nappy rash. It's available from Helgason's pharmacies in the Knutsford/Altrincham area, and, I think, by post.

It's basically Friar's Balsaam mixed with lanolin, and the balsaam has the effect of forming a sort of 'skin' that is protective.

gingeroots · 30/07/2012 17:43

Another one here who's heard of egg whites on pressure sores in days of yore .

Pleiades45 · 31/07/2012 21:32

WSM, 2 things:

1)one of my boys had a bad nappy rash. When I changed from Breastfeeding to formula he came out in hives so I swapped to soy formula and he was constipated for nearly 6 weeks until I got him onto a hypo-allergenic formula. His problem was a reaction to the protein and not the lactose!

  1. Going back to 'curing' the rash, an egg white, whisked slightly so you can apply it,will neutralise the acid on the surface of his skin. Worked wonders with my little fella and I used all the creams and nappies I could find.

For anyone who is having to deal with this and feeling there is no help then please try tiny troubles salve. It is all natural and worked like a miracle for my little boy. I tell everyone about this 'miracle cream' as we call it and am so glad to have found it on-line.
