Dental X-Rays, Paracetmol, Fillings & Pregnancy :-(

Excuse the long rant but I feel like crying at the moment. Since Thursday I have been suffering from horredous toothache which just seems to be getting worse every day. After seeing my dentist on Friday I was gived antibiotics but couldn't have a dental x-ray as I am 11 wks pg. I had to see the dentist again this morning and have had a filling, but I still have pain in one of my back molars which is making me . My dentist said the only way to know for sure what is going on with the molar is to take an x-ray.I don't understand how I can have pain in that tooth as I had root canal treatment on it a year ago and thought that the nerve was taken out. The filling in that molar had broken so the dentist repaired it with a dressing today as well.

In short I am worried so much as I haven't eaten much and been taking paracetmol since the pain started. Is it OK to have had a filling too ? Also will I have no alternative if the pain in my molar remains but to have an x-ray. Most of all I am terrified that I have increased the risk of a m/c.

Much sympathy metrobaby.

The bad news is that you can have another abcyss in a tooth already root-filled (and the cure is to have the tooth out). I know, I had several a few years ago and now have a nice big gap.

However, it could just be that you're still feeling the effects of today's treatment, so look after yourself for now.

If the pain continues then I don't see why they can't just give you antibiotics without an x-ray - it won't permanently treat the problem but you can worry about it again when you have had the baby. Do go back to the dentist if the pain gets any worse or if it continues for more than a couple of days though.

Finally fillings are fine when preg, as is paracetemol according to my doctor. Its just the x-rays that can be a problem. Try to relax - maybe get a hot water bottle to the side of your face and think of all those happy times ahead!

Metrobaby, have an x-ray. Here's a brief thread on it. I really really sympathize. I've had failed root canals, also.

Metrobaby · 06/10/2003 21:03

TBH - I am beginning to think I may just have the darn tooth out anyway - although the dentist says this is usually the last resort. My root canal treatment on that tooth was awful and so painful I can't bear to go through it again. To cap it all even after the treatment it has given me bother continually. I was also using clove oil over the weekend but am hoping this is OK whilst pg.

Metrobaby, are you going to a specialist, I think they are called Endodontists over here, if you are going to brave an x-ray, I would go to the specialist that can re-do the root canal that you can trust to do the best job.

The quick solution is to remove the tooth, which I can totally understand, but this way you will never have any regrets if you know that you at least went to a root canal specialist and they advised you to remove it. I had a ton of dental work done in my pregnancy because I believe my DD was sucking the calcium all up for herself!! I wore the lead apron and she survived somehow! Especially if it is a tooth in the front!

Metrobaby, I have had the same, not as badly as you thank Goodness. I had an abcess when pg with ds, it was so painful, we drove across London to an emergency dentist at 4.00 am. As soon as ds was born I had a root canal - worse than childbirth definately. Since then it has given me problems, the most recent a couple of weeks ago at 10 wks pg. Cant even take decent painkillers or hit the scotch, hoe ironic. I would have the tooth pulled if it got too bad, certainly I'd nver have another root canal. Anyway, my sympathy and understanding is with you

Metrobaby · 08/10/2003 10:23

I'm glad I'm not the only one then to vow never to have a root canal again then. Unfortunately the pain has returned. This time it is worse in the tooth that has just had a filling done. The tooth that had the root canal done is also painful however - so it looks like another trip to the dentist. Can't believe it - I thought having a filling done was meant to make teeth better not worse

Sunchowder - agree it is so important to go to a dentist you trust. Unfortunately my previous dentist left the practice and I don't know anyone else . Anyone know a good dentist in the Croydon area?

Metrobaby ... I had a tooth break the other day and had to have it seen to ... the dentist assured me that a filling and local anaesthetic were fine as I am 24 weeks pregnant ... but I will need a crown on that tooth and he said that he wouldn't do it until after the baby was born as I would need an x-ray etc etc.
Poor you ... toothache is the worst thing ....
Hugs ...
