mothers who smoke set a bad example for their children?

Yesterday afternoon as I was hanging out my washing My next door neighbor came out onto her balcony and lit up a cigarette and starting smoking.
now you may think well what is my point?
if so my point is she is a parent of four young boys and she looks to be in her late 20s early 30s and I just think it is a pity that she has a habit of smoking because the first thing is it will only do her harm and her boys will be dependent on her until they grow up but in the meantime once they get into their late teens they may decide to take up smoking too and the chances are she may approve and so her boys who are currently Healthy will start becoming unhealthy by taking up smoking.
and I think its such a reckless thing to do.
both my parents were smokers when I was a nipper but thankfully my mum stopped and has now been tobacco free for over 30 years.
my dad stopped smoking when he was run over by a car.
he now has diabetes and is severely disabled.
and my mum is also Diabetic and lost 3 toes last years when her foot starting rotting from gangrene after she got an infection that didn't heal.
my dad is in his late 70s and my mum is in her late 60s.
now imagine how worse they would be if they were still smokers?
I'm not running down mums who smoke, I just think it sets a bad example for their children seeing their mum or dad as the case may be puffing away.
day after day I see mothers pushing prams with a cigarette in their mouth and it makes me feel sad for them and their children because what if the mother has a heart attack due to the damage caused by the tobacco?
anyway please share your Thoughts.
Thanks.

Why are you asking this question? Are you not sure whether it sets a bad example? Of course it does. I am pretty sure the Mother knows that and I strongly doubt she will approve of her sons smoking, she'll probably be feeling pretty guilty. She's addicted.

magpienchips · 02/06/2011 12:02

yes you are right sparkle not all children of smoking parents start the habit themselves.
but in the case of my family my two older sisters my two younger brothers are all smokers.
my eldest sister was in hospital early this year due to breathing problems caused from her heavy long term habit.
it really worried me and I just hope this will make her finally quit before its too late.

Only on MN would you find people criticising someone for being judgemental about smoking mothers........

Anyway, I'm with you magpienchips. I hate it and think people who smoke must be stupid.....ok I know they're addicted but still think they're stupid. My parents smoked through my childhood. I didnt realise how horrible it was until they gave up and then started again. I have never smoked but my brother does.

My dh's parents smoked until recently. Two out of the four children smoke, luckily my DH doesn't. Though he wouldn't be my DH if he did.

I really don't think the health side seems to bother smokers but I would have thought the money side would. Some couples smoke their way through a family holiday to Disney each year Shock.

Thing Is my dad gave up smoking 25 years ago and poor sod has had lots of health problems recently. Whereas my mum has been smoking cigars for 33 years and seems to be in rude health, age 74.

I don't see much of my mum because I can't stand the smell, it makes me feel sick.

Rant over!

silentcatastrophe · 02/06/2011 12:12

We all know that smoking is bad for you. If you read the daily Mail, so is breathing. In an ideal world, no-one would smoke or drink or take drugs, or take any kind of mind-enhancer/diminisher. Bad things happen. A lot worse than smoking.

cyclops,
Thank you.
I too wonder how anyone can afford to smoke anymore?
and it is just amazing the amount of money people spend on cigarettes despite the fact that it causes so much damage to their health.
my ex bless her who died in July 2009 was a very heavy smoker and was also morbidly obese.
we used to have no end of rows because I found her smoking so off putting
one night I considered sleeping in the bath but even that was tainted with the smell of tobacco.
and as much as i loved Anita I didn't love the smell of tobacco on her breath every time we kissed.
she died from heart failure and died in her mum's arms...I'm not certain but I think her smoking habit contributed to her death and she was only 28 years old.
how sad is that?

Cyclops, had to make one more comment on this thread - as I said, I don't smoke but think I would rather take up a thirty a day habit than have to suffer the horrors of a family holiday to Disneyland Wink

Sending people foul private messages is not something I would like a parent to do either, that sort of devious behaviour would worry me far more that a mother who takes herself outside to smoke.

Erm why would you sleep in the bath, do you not have a sofa?
