Anyone used homeopathy? Does it work?

extraconfusedhelp · 27/05/2011 20:23

I have PCOS and just went to see a homeopath today. She has given me something to take.

I just wanted to find out if anyone has been treated by a homeopath before? And how quickly the treatment worked?

When somebody can show me proof that homeopathy has cured anything that wouldn;t ahve got better by itself anyway, thn I might just be prepared to think about changing my mind.

Until then I will continue to belive that it's exploitative potentially dangerous claptrap.

SerapisBey · 29/05/2011 21:48

extraconfused you will find that a lot of mners slate homeopathy, it's rather dull..... and repetitive and probably not the sort of constructive comment you were after. As a homeopath, I could ramble on for hours about the virtues and successes of it. In short, try it, keep a diary of any symptom changes, moods, effects, etc you have. Take the diary to your hpath next time you go, it will help them see how your body is adapting to the remedies. You will see a change, but it's not quick like allopathic medicine, this is because it works with the underlying cause of the problem not the symptoms. We live in an a culture that has taken instant gratification as the norm, but sometimes we need to think outside the box and homeopathy does that. It is a subtle, harmless form of healing that is in no way toxic like anything your gp would give you. You have prob had pcos for a while, give homeopathy 6 months and you will see a shift. Anything your gp gives you will mask the problem but the pcos will stay there, homeopathy will work to allow your body to disperse them naturally. Unlike allopathic medicine (prescriptions) homeopathy has reams of notes/ studies taken identifying all the side effects of taking all of the pills, so you can rest assure your practitioner is giving you something safe. Prescrip on the other hand are chemical, toxic and the side effects can be dangerous. yogagirl17 makes some good points, although I would say that some of us see homeopathy as a way of living and not an alternative. It can complement over the counter medicines but for the best results it is best on its own or with chinese medicine, acupuncture, reiki , etc for the all-round holistic experience. I wish you luck, have faith and be assured that your homeopath would have most definitely taken more interest in you as a human being than a gp!

olivo · 29/05/2011 21:51

yes ,and yes - worked on sleep problems that many other methods had failed to sort.

seeker · 29/05/2011 23:21

It wasn't the water or the sugar that sorted the sleep problem. It was either that it was just about to sort itself anyway, or it was that the "remedy" gave you confidence becaue you had faith in it and so the problem cured itself.

Reading serapisbays post, OP, sums up for you what it is that is dangerous about homeopathy. Of course, taking sugar&water pills is not dangerous. But being told that it "works best not used alongside conventional medicine" (I can't cut and paste exact comments as am posting from my phone) and so on is obviously dangerous. I have a friend who stopped giving her child their epilepsy medication on advice from a homeopath. She is lucky her DS didn't die from her fucking stupidity.

As a statistician, I know that there is is a significant prize for the 1st person to find evidence that homeopathy works better than a placebo. It is still unclaimed.

I'm sure your pcos is making life hard for you in some ways, and I feel bad for you that you are being encouraged to invest time and hope (even though not your own money like most people are) in something as ludicrous as homeopathy. Sad

Gooseberrybushes · 30/05/2011 01:31

It's definitely worth a try. I would go for it! And no harmful side effects. Excellent.

seeker · 30/05/2011 06:31

Of course your homeopath is giving you something safe - sugar and water in small quantities are!

ANd it is insane to say that conventional medicine doesn't chart side effects. Such dangerous nonesense.

Pcos is a nice, vague illness where changing your diet can help you get better,

And it makes you feel low and unhappy - talking to somebody sympathetic can help you feel better,Perfect for homeopathy.

SeprapisBey-tell me how you would cure septacaemia, meneingitis and glaucoma.

ppeatfruit · 30/05/2011 10:19

Surely if 'normal' meds. are properly tested as big Pharma advertises there should be no side effects which we all know isn't true, also "changing yr. diet to help you get better" is true of almost ALL illnesses.

strawberryjelly · 30/05/2011 10:55

ppeatfruit- how do you know that your dog and your child would not have recovered anyway?

You cannot prove it was the homeopathy .

I have tried homepathy for all kinds of things and it made no difference at all.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 30/05/2011 11:23

MNm how come you deleteed my post pointint out that homeopaths are all fucking crooks and idiots, which they are, and let the dangerous advice to 'try homeopahty and stop taking proper medicine' stand?

aliceliddell · 30/05/2011 11:34

Of course it doesn't work. It's water. Diluted water. Diluted, shaken water. Diluted, shaken, expensive water. That's why they invented medical science.

SindyTellsMe · 30/05/2011 11:49

I have tried it twice.

Once as a case study for a colleague who was studying it. A mouth ulcer went away. I think it might have gone away anyway.

Secondly, was bought a session as a "relaxing" gift during my second pregnancy. The therapist was a great listener; I had never before spent a full 90 minutes talking about my ailments, and taking some time to consider how they might be interconnected. I found that really helpful. She gave me a remedy to "clear me out."

A week later I lost my baby at 16 weeks and a while later I phoned her to tell her what had happened; not to blame her, but to explain why I wouldn't be back. I have never heard such spectacular arse-covering in my life. However she did ask if I would like a "vitamin tonic" and helpfully left it on my doorstep, which I thought was a weird but nice gesture until I was informed that that would be £42, please and that she would see me at my next appointment.

I ended up writing to her to say I did not want any further contact. Awful, as she was a FOAF, but I still feel I was horribly ripped off at a vulnerable time.

Checkmate · 30/05/2011 12:05

Sindy Sad
Homeopaths claim that what they gave you, cured you, unless you get worse/ something tragic happens, and then they suddenly remember that it's just water, and there are no active ingredients, and as Sindy experienced, do a lot of ass covering.

MrsFlittersnoop · 30/05/2011 12:09

Homeopathy is all about the placebo effect and the psychological benefits of having a few very long consultations with someone who is trained to "listen", where you can talk at great length about how you are feeling.

20 years ago I suffered from Post Viral syndrome after a very nasy viral illness with glandular-fever type symptoms. I had been extremely unwell, had 6 weeks off work, could only work part-time for a couple of months after that, and had very painful swollen glands for a year afterwards. I felt exhausted and depressed all the time and was scared there was something more seriously wrong with me.

It was of course a chronic but time-limited condition, and no-one in the medical profession could give me any idea when I would start to feel well again. My anxiety was undoubtedly hindering my recovery - some of my symptoms, (exhaustion, insomnia) were probably anxiety related.

Went in desperation to a homeopath who had been strongly recommended by friends - I don't believe this stuff but felt I had nothing to lose. The placebo effect undoubtedly worked for me. A month later my symptoms had gone for good. I understand now that what worked was not the sugar pill, but the chance to talk through my illness and how it was affecting my life with someone non-judgemental and extremely reassuring and sympathetic.

Believe in the placebo effect (which is extremely effective) , not the medicine.

Checkmate · 30/05/2011 12:09

SGB didn't you actually claim, in your deleted post, that homeopaths are either crooks or idiots? I don't think they are (necessarily) both. But don't see why it got deleted, selling a product with this kind of (lack of) evidence proves that they must be one or the other, surely?

colditz · 30/05/2011 12:13

Homeopathy is excellent for tummy bugs, bruising, coughs and colds - anything, in fact, that disappears on it's own within a week. The homeopathic remedy will ensure that the malaise will disappear on it's own within a week.

colditz · 30/05/2011 12:15

And the very best of homeopathic experts are extremely skilled counsellers, who you can truly open up to. Of COURSE you feel better after years of being briskly shoo'ed from doctor's clinics with the medical equivelant of "stop whining, there's nothing we can do and I don't care anyway" ringing in your ears.

Checkmate · 30/05/2011 12:16

Mrs flittersnoop, I agree with you that havinsomone sympahetic to talk to is the thing that can be helpful about most alternative woo. But as homepage and alternative "therapists" are unregulated, the extent to which they have developed good listening skills will be highly variable. As will he amount they charge, and the amount of dangerous crap they spew (such as "stop takin the prescription meds" or whatever).

I would encourage people who are beating their heads against a brick wall with finding an effective treatment within the Nhs to go and speak to an accredited counsellor, who are held to high professional standards, rather than a homeopath.

TakeItOnTheChins · 30/05/2011 12:18

At the risk of being flamed My DS was cured of eczema when 2 yrs old by hom. sulphur. he shut his finger in a car door at 14 and we saved his nail by soaking in arnica solution and taking loads of arnica.

What a ridiculous statement.

You have absolutely no way of knowing whether the nail would have been any worse if it hadn't been soaked in arnica.

I might as well say "I cut my foot but waving a Twix at it made sure it didn't turn gangrenous." Hmm

Checkmate · 30/05/2011 12:18

Sorry for spelling and weird autocorrections.... Typing on phone.

TeenageWildlife · 30/05/2011 12:19

Now Traditional Chinese Medicine really does work and a good practitioner can do wonders for PCO's

Homeopathy=balderdash - and yes it is dangerous, people take what they believe to be malaria prevention in homeopathic form and promptly catch it when they go abroad. Dangerous.

SpringchickenGoldBrass · 30/05/2011 12:23

All homeopathic practitioners are either crooks or idiots. They are taking people's money for sugar and water - either they know that it's all bollocks, in which case they are crooks, or they believe their own bollocks, in which case they are idiots.

LynetteScavo · 30/05/2011 12:26

My grandma was a huge fan.

Never worked on me.

The teething remedies seem to stop babies cheeks being so red though.

I did watch a very convincing documentary once.
