Enlarged spleen. What?

Just been for my ultrasound results at my GP (I've got gallstones), and he's also referring me to a heamotigist because I have a slightly enlarged spleen.

Dr seemed fairly unconcerned particularly because everything else seemed normal (bar the gallstones). I asked him if this was a scary thing and he said no and that it might even right itself.

Nevertheless, I'm a bit worried! Anyone else had this or know anything about it?

That funny my ten year old is in hospital at the moment with gall stones and an enlarged spleen they think she has hereditary sperocytosis !! Sounds awfull but isn't so bad. More of a problem is that she is in agony with cholecystitis !!!

That's awful!! Poor her. Gallbladder pain is absolutely horrendous so it's very hard luck that a 10yo should have up deal with it!!

Hi limelight I just had this because I have had glandular fever. It is not serious, the spleen (from what I was told) helps fight off infection so becomes enlarged if under duress. I was told mine might rupture and to do no heavy lifting - the doctor was laughing about it (In Spain doctors have a funny sense of humour!) I really don't think it is a serious thing. Try not to worry. Mine has gone down (after 2 months) but I can still feel it. If you can't feel it, or any pain, it will be minor. They are just being thorough and checking everything out.

HTH in some way!

hello -I have hereditary spherocytosis,as does my ds - I have no spleen (removed when I was 6) but ds still has his. The spleen can enlarge with infection/or as a result of HS - ds's is slightly enlarged-but this isn't a problem for him.He takes 5mg of folic acid a day and is in stonking good health -though we are told to watch out for jaundice, fever and any gall stone type probs- if he gets gall stones (which is v possible) they'll whip out his spleen too.

Thanks everyone. That's all very reassuring! Waiting for blood results and then GP will refer me. Obviously having had no pain on my left side prior to him telling me I had an enlarged spleen, now I do! Psychosomatic I think!
