Hairy chin

I am starting to get to my wits end and wandered if anyone can help with this one.

Since having my 2nd child I have been getting a hairy chin to the point where I have to pluck them every day. They seem to be getting thicker not lighter. I then seem to get ingrown hirs and spots around the hair follics which looks unsightly. The hair above my top lip (my moustache as my ds likes to tell me!!!) is also getting darker and thicker.

I have to use hair lightner and trim the moustache and pluck the hair on my chin which is getting me down as I fel very unfeminine. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else and if so, how have you dealt with it and has it been successful?

Thanks for reading and any advice would be of help

Would you go to a salon and ask their advice? Waxing might be the best thing and if you get a professional to do it instead of an at home kit, it's likely to last longer and have less problems with the ingrowing hairs etc.

I have a few hairs on my top lip that I pluck and one random chin lash that grow on my jawline every few weeks. Also another on my collarbone. Where do they come from?!

I think you ought to go to the GP and get referred to someone who can test your hormone levels to see if it's something to do with that - it's pretty normal to start getting some "whiskers" as you get older, but what you're describing sounds a lot more than that, and to have come on quite quickly, which suggests there's a reason behind it.

I get thick black hairs on my chin/neck/"sideburns" as well as a 'tache, and I've got Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I use a cream called Vaniqa which helps reduce the hair, but it takes months to really kick in. Definitely go and see your GP and get some bloods done, you need to get hormone levels checked.

While this may well be Polycystic ovarian syndrome, and so it is worth talking to your doctor, in regards to removing the hair itself have you considered laser treatment?

It's expensive (but shouldn't be overly so for such a small area) and requires a few treatments - but once this is done the hairs should never grow back.

I wouldn't bother with waxing, they won't take much longer to grow back than they will be with plucking, so it would be a very expensive treatment for limited results.

I'm in the same boat. I get thick black hairs either side of my chin that I have to pull out every 2 days, and I have a bunch of ingrown hairs and spots all the time there too. I also get thick course blonde hairs there which is a bit strange. I've been tested for PCOS but I don't have it. I'm just hairy :(.

I'm waiting for IPL to come up on Groupon in my area but I know SK:N do laser hair removal (which works on black/dark hairs). They are 30% off 6 treatments at the moment. Chin is about £80 a session singly. I'm sure there might be other places that do it cheaper though.

*coarse not course!

It's reassuring to know that others are in the same boat. Will go to gp to ask for blood test but maybe think that I am just hairy too Amystake!

find a good local beauty salon and try electrolysis. They will tell you why it is not a good idea to pluck - I believe it makes the hair grow back stronger and thicker.

AmyStake · 25/05/2011 14:56

Found a clinic in Manchester that will do chin IPL/laser treatments for £25 a go - www.tarahealthandbeauty.co.uk/index.php?page=iplprices

Not sure whether to go for that or give up and just buy an IPL home machine.

I second the suggestion to go for electrolysis. I was self conscious about a few longer blonde hairs and the beautician said that many, many women come in, some with very heavy growth, and it is very common.

I also have several friends who have gone for laser treatment. I can't because I am so blonde. Hmm

A beautician won't bat an eyelid as they see it all the time.
