Children's Nurofen overdose help!

chicca · 12/11/2005 19:51

Have discovered that both DH and I have given DS (16 months) 4 and 5 ml respectively in the space of an hour and half as he as been suffering with teething. Obviously we didn't realise the other had done this.
Can't raise a doctor and NHS direct rubbish. The notes with the medicine say

"Problems in overdose are rare, nut of you accidentally give more than the rec. dose contact your doctor straight away."

Any experience/advise? DS now asleep for the night.

Are they not only to have 2.5 ml if under 2yrs anyway?

Lonelymum · 12/11/2005 19:54

I wouldn't think doing what you have done will harm your ds, but others may know differently. Why do you say NHS direct are rubbish? Someone will answer your query surely?

I would say that it's unlikely to have done any harm but if you can't get advice from NHS Direct (not sure why?) then try calling the local casulaty and they will probably put your mind at rest

Seona1973 · 12/11/2005 19:57

I'm sure your lo will be fine. My sisters ds once drank half a bottle of calpol and the only side effect was a bit of a dodgy belly with runny pink coloured poo (lovely if a bit tmi!!).

Shazzler, with childrens nurofen the dose for over 1 year is 5mls so it is only a double dose rather than a quadruple one. (I think calprofen has a dose of 2.5mls but not sure why it would be different - stronger maybe?!)

chicca · 12/11/2005 19:58

Yes, it was 4 mls followed by 5 mls 90 mins later. The recommended dose for 1-3 yr olds is 1 5ml three times in 24 hours.

Sorry should explain that I am in Spain and was using the NHS Direct website which we have found impossible. No out of hours doc here but am madly trying to phone doc friend in UK.

Will keep a close eye on him. Any idea what I am particularly looking out for though??

How much does your DS weigh?

This is unlikely to pose a problem, at any rate. A one-off high does is really not likely to cause any trouble.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2005 19:59

Oh, and how much iboprofen/ml is there in Neurophen? I don't know where ours is.

Seona1973 · 12/11/2005 20:02

its 100mg/5ml of ibuprofen

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2005 20:02

Oh, wait, I found it. 9ml of Nurophen = 180 mg of iboprofen. Which would be a normal dose if your DS weighed 38-42 lbs (normal dose = strong but safe to give every 6 hours).

chicca · 12/11/2005 20:03

Each 5ml contains 100mg of ibuprofen.

He weighs about 12kgs.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2005 20:04

Ah, here's a quote from Dr Sears:

Ibuprofen has a good safety margin, i.e. it takes many times the regular dose to be harmful.

So you're fine.

The side effects of too much iboprofen are: stomach problems (stomach ache, maybe diahroea, or constipation?), and small reduction in blood clotting ability (bruises will take longer to heal). So it's all pretty minimal, anyway.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2005 20:05

12kg = 26.4 lbs. So he's on the border between a 100mg dose and a 125mg dose. So you've given about 1.5 x a dose in an hour and a half.

I really wouldn't worry at all. I wouldn't do this regularly (duh), but I wouldn't worry at all.

The webpage I've been working from is here

chicca · 12/11/2005 20:06

That's 26 lbs

I am sure when ds1 had an op in hospital, he was given a double does of some pain killer to really knock the pain (but don't quote me on that and I can't remember what it was). Anyway, I don't think your double dose sounds too dreadful, especially as it was 90 minutes apart.

NotQuiteCockney · 12/11/2005 20:08

Yeah, some of the web stuff I saw was talking about larger doses when under medical supervision.

The thing is, the maxdose on the bottles has to be safe (if not sensible) to have 4 times a day for weeks, as some parents will do that. It's not about what's safe to give once, it's about what's safe to give over and over and over.

chicca · 12/11/2005 20:11

NQC you are fabulous! Thank you so much.

DH wants me to add that he called NHS direct and it was engaged and called another number for the hard of hearing but here was no answer.( Tempted to make bad joke but won't). Have also heard glowing things about it too though.

Thanks for all your help. Will stock up on nappies and keep a close eye and perhaps communicate with DH more in the future

I think NHS direct is a bit overwhelmed at the moment. The Dr Sears website is good, if a bit American.

DONT WORRY My uncle works in pharamacutical industry...

IF A SLIGHT OVERDOSE CAN DO ANY 'SERIOUSE' (or significant) HARM THEY WONT EVEN GIVE THE MEDICINE A LICENSE AND NO WAY WILL YOU BE ABLE TO BUY IT OVER THE COUNTER

also most medicines it the amount in 24 hours that counts as well so bear that in mind

DONT WORRY< SURE CHILD WILL BE FINE!
