copper coil after birth

Have a 3 mo DD, bfing and no periods yet. Am thinking/hoping to get a copper coil fitted (it's the last option re: contraception so if this doesn't work not sure what we'll do Confused ). I'm really worried about side effects of heavy periods etc and lots of Shock comments on here about trouble people have had with other effects.

Has anyone had it fitted after they had children before their cycle got back to normal? I know the first few months of periods/pmt post baby can be bad anyway, not sure if it will be quite horrific with new coil too. Any stories or comments on copper coil really welcome as am feeling quite Hmm about it all.

Watching for advice too.

I had a copper coil fitted 5 month after dd was born. It was fine - fitting was slightly uncomfortable but after childbirth, a walk in the park...

My periods are slightly heavier than befoe, but only for one day of my period. I don't get much period pain. They do last slightly longer.

I was still irregular as dd was ebf when I got the coil fitted. Went back to normal a month later when I started mixed feeding as I returned to work.

I had mine fitted at my 6 week check after ds, so well before my periods started again. ( i waited after dd1 and was pregnant again with dd2 before I could get one fitted.) I also had one before children, and between dd2 and ds.

I had slightly lighter periods, and no other effects at all. I love it Smile

Had copper coil fitted 3 months after DD was born. Was bfeeding and periods hadn't returned yet.

Now, 7 months, on, periods are just a bit longer than before, and perhaps a tiny bit heavier, but not too much.

Love it :)

I had mine fitted when DD2 was about 9 months. I hate it and wouldn't have one again. My periods have gone from 4 days of moderate bleeding to 8 days of flooding through tampons and towels multiple times a day. I'm now going to have to start taking medication to make my periods lighter, or have it removed.

Would you consider a mirena? Im on my 2nd and love it, no periods woo hoo, its a bit like being a man

mizu · 23/05/2011 19:44

I had one fitted and loved it. Periods were heavy but have always been heavy. Had to have it taken out as have had an op cos of heavy bleeding. Would love to have it back it but can't apparantely. Relying on condoms at the moment which is crap.

Never had any other side effects from the copper coil, now the mirena coil on the other hand.............

reastie · 23/05/2011 21:11

mosschops definately not mirena - my body goes crazy with hormones and after taking months to recover from coming off of the pill with almost daily migraines for 3 months I swore never, EVER to take anything with hormones again. Otherwise woul defo consider mirena.

I had my copper coil put in when DS2 was 12 weeks old. No problem having it fitted and no problems since. Periods not any heavier, my skin is better than when I was on the pill and my moods are better. Very happy with it, don't have to think about contraception for another 10 years now.

IWillCountToThree · 23/05/2011 21:16

I had another fitted when DS was 8w. My first i had after DD2, had it removed, and was pg 4 days later. (deliberately! :o )

No heavier periods, next to no pain, no hormone probs. I love it!

welliesandpyjamas · 23/05/2011 21:19

Iirc they weren't happy to fit it unless you had started periods again and were in the right part of your cycle to be sure you weren't pregnant at time of fitting.

MiniModee · 23/05/2011 21:21

Wellies I hadn't started my periods again when I had mine put in when DS2 was 12weeks, didn't get a period for ages afterwards either. Did have to do a pg test though.

welliesandpyjamas · 23/05/2011 21:41

They probably vary from clinic to clinic then

MiniModee · 23/05/2011 21:48

I think they must, my best friend had hers done at the GPs office but my GP didn't want to do coils and always sends to a FP clinic. It must differ from place to place I suppose.

Jas · 23/05/2011 23:20

I also had to have a pg test and had it done at fpc....I would always go to them for coil fitting, they have nuch more experience of fitting them than most gps
