Where to buy post-mastectomy bras and swimsuits

My mum had a mastectomy about a month ago. She doesn't yet have any bras (just a little sponge insert thing that she got at the hospital that keeps riding up) and is worried about going swimming. Is there anywhere on the high street we could go together to get kitted out, or does it tend to be a mailorder thing? We live in Birmingham so have access to big stores but I don't know where to look.

I don't have any experience but think m&s have a range.

HI there, I have a mastectomy and I use online companies (Nicola Jane, Contura Belle for example)

I don't especially like M&S range of bras - because the straps are too narrow, - though they've got a couple or plain ones which are OK)
John Lewis also do some, (Rose Royce I think - also online) and do mastectomy swimwear.

Your hospital will put pockets into a swimsuit for you, as will John Lewis (if you buy an ordinary swimsuit from them) but I find mastectomy swimsuits better because they come higher up your chest and underarm, so the scar doesn't show.

Nicola Jane and others often have sales in swimwear .

I've got a Been-a-Boob I use for swimming - it goes into the right shape and doesn't get waterlogged. Another tip is once she gets her proper prosthesis from the hospital, she can sew the 'softie' inside the bra part of a swimsuit - so it won't 'escape' Smile

I found a tiny safety pin hed the softie on place in my bra.

It is worth looking online to see if you have an independent specialist store in Birmingham - they will have a good choice and will help with fitting etc. Big cities sometimes do have them.

My tips for bras (obviously just iME) are wider straps are more comfortable, and I like bras which have a lace insert across the chest part - because it hides my scar, and stops everything showing if I lean forward.

I also found little vest top with a lacy bit at the top handy for popping under lower cut clothing (cheaper alternative to revamping your whole wardrobe)

HTH If I think of anything else, I let you know Smile

If you or your mum have any question or anything - or just feel like a chat, - there is the Tamoxifen thread - all ladies who have had BC, lots of support there and you'd be very welcome.

Best wishes to your mum - I hope she finds something to suit Smile

M&S are great. Their fitters are trained by the McMillan nurses. I was fitted after my mastectomy (left breast), very comfortable. You can order bras with either side/both inserts for your breast form. Their bras are also quite cheap - same price as "normal" bras. Now I just order them online. Haven't tried their swimsuits yet, but sure they will be OK.
Has your Mum been properly fitted for a breast form yet by a McMillan nurse?
Don't buy any bras until this has been done.
Regards to your Mum, I know how she feels.

Hello, I am currently a swimwear designer, i design specialised swimwear for people who have colostomy bags and people who are incontinent, i have just recently started designing swimwear for ladies who have had a mastectomy, i would like to find out what would your mum find comfortable to wear? would she prefer a sewn in pad for comfort or would she prefer a pocket for the prosthesis? if there is any questions you would like to ask please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you.

I got all my bras (and boobs!) and swimsuit from Nicola Jane and they were great. And they have a sale at the moment!

I think their only shop is in London but the return postage is free.

I second the tamoxigang thread, it's been a lifesaver for me.

There's a shop in Worcester called Embrace that sells all things to do with mastectomy underwear and swimwear where you could go to be fitted. Think the people who set it up have some experience of breast cancer themselves. Otherwise if its not too east to get there they do mail order
