Hair Loss

i know it's pretty common to lose hair after having a baby (DS is 3.5 months) , but i am losing handfuls daily... hairbrush is full, bed is covered in the morning and it's quite scary.

i've had alopecia before, due to stress and lost a huge and noticeable amount of hair, and i'm worried about similar effects this time round.

so, could anyone please let me know any similar experiences, treatments available or ideas for coping?

I lost loads and loads of hair after having my dc - or so it seemed to me. There were clumps of it in my bed, the shower plughole was always blocked, I found it in the cot, nappies, a carpet of hair on the bathroom floor etc. However I didnt lose it all, nobody else could tell. I think it seemed far worse as I had long hair back then.
All I can say is try not to worry as it is normal to lose what feels like half a head of hair at this time and the stress of worrying about alopecea wont help. If you're really concerned speak to your gp, or see what your health visitor says.

You're right that it's normal - I went to the doc and she explained, and said that as long as you could see (or rather someone else could see!) new short hairs coming in where you were losing it, then it was just the hormones and nothing to worry about. But that if you were getting shiny hairless areas, then you might need to be referred to a specialist to check it out and try to help. HTH

I m loosing mine. I feel sick thinking about it. The rest of my hair is exactly the same as its always been but my hairline seems to be getting thinner (fringe very sparse)and it seems to be receding very very very slowly. Noone else can see it apparantly but i can. I cant stand how thin it feels but ive not noticed any hair coming out as you have all described.

take folic acid and vitamin B. I was the same and within 2 weeks of the folic acid I was back to normal. People think it is low iron that is the issue, but it is usually low folate levels.

Works....

thanks for the tip shine.

I was anaemic at the end of my pregnancy and lost a lot of blood in labour, so it could be Iron related, but also folic acid and vit B makes sense as they aren't very prevalent in my diet.

Get your B12 checked too

It is normal. You can get vitamin supplements specifically for hair which may help the regrowth. You should start to notice regrowth soon. I used to pull my hair back as if I was tying it in a pony tail and I'd see short spiky hair coming through.
