GOUT! Anybody in the know?

My husband has gout.

I dont understand how, he is a health freak. He skis and cycles and is so fit and active. Ok, he binge eats chocolate now and then. But otherwise?
He does not drink alcohol. He eats lots of veg, lean meat, fish. He loves fatty fish such as mackerel and smoked salmon. He drinks 4-5 cups of green tea per day.

How come he now has gout?

Does anybody know if the cold arctic climate is a factor?

Don't know about the climate, but oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines all triggers apparently as from same family. (my step-father used to get it a lot, cut all of those out and never had it again)

Does he drink any more than 4-5 cups of green tea? If not then he is probably not getting enough liquid on board.

I dont think he drinks MORE than 4-5 cups of green tea, but he hardly drink anything else! Not even with meals....

He does not eat those veg. Maybe 2 potatoes a week! Some tomatoes though....

I find if I don't drink enough liquid then mine flairs up. He really should be drinking other liquid as well. I try to drink 8/10 glasses of water or squash a day

The average urine output for adults is about 1.5 liters (6/7 cups) a day. You lose close to an additional liter (about 4 cups) of water a day through breathing, sweating and bowel movements. Food usually accounts for 20 percent of your total fluid intake, so if you consume 2 liters of water or other beverages a day (a little more than 8 cups) along with your normal diet, you will typically replace your lost fluids.Eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Another approach to water intake is the "8 x 8 rule" ? drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day (about 2 liters). The rule could also be stated, "Drink eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid a day," as all fluids count toward the daily total. Although the approach really isn't supported by scientific evidence, many people use this easy-to-remember rule as a guideline for how much water and other fluids to drink. My Doctor advised us that men should have roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of drinks a day and women should drink 2 liters (about 9 cups) of drinks a day.

Also he definatly should be eating more veg. as that will help. Why doesn't he eat veg? Could you try some of the techniques that parents use on children and hide it in food ie: grated carrot in spag bol.

Ranty O.P. says he eats LOTS of veg.!! High acid foods such as vinegar, oranges, etc. cause gout for D.H.

"He does not eat those veg. Maybe 2 potatoes a week! Some tomatoes though...."

D'oh was just reading the reply to Bucherest and misinterpreted it to say he didn't eat veg. Have just reread OP and replies.
