chiropractor - in my experience the only thing that helped - and almost immediately.

Its expensive but worth missing out on a few other things to get rid of that pain.

Its horrible

katymac · 10/11/2005 08:41

I've got to do something I'm childminding today and I can lift or bend (I'm struggling to stand up and sit down)

OMG - snap !! Got it last night and didn't sleep.
I have sprayed myself copiously with deep heat and it's worked a bit ... I now have more movement. Tho' DH helpfully says that I smell like a rugby player

I gather chemists now do ibuprofen patches .... so I am off to get some of those.

Hope you begin to feel better - as it's shit!

katymac · 10/11/2005 09:33

I don't normally take ibufrofen - as it upsets my tummy - I wonder if the pathes will?

One of the first times I got it, I was virtually immobilised by the pain for days, until I bent to pick something up and the muscle went out of spasm. Such a relief. Keep as mobile as is possible (I know thats not easy) but if you can get to a chiro do so - and find one qualified in dry needle therapy too as they can treat muscles in spasm through acupuncture.

katymac · 10/11/2005 20:59

Help - really bad atm - have taken lots of paracetamol

What can I do?

I had the most horrific pain last week - pulled or trapped something and could barely move. I went to docs and got diclofenac and co-dydramol which really helped. The physio sheet they gave me had me lying flat on my front so I did that all night in front of the TV.

The other thing they told me was to keep the lordosis (arch in small of back) at all times - so don't bend forward as it will make it worse. Squat to pick things up and when I was tidying the playroom I did it on my knees so I could keep my back straight all the time.

It was horrendous but it's much better now a week later - still not right but OK.

katymac · 10/11/2005 21:05

Thanks GDG - I'll try lying on my front (I slept that way last night & if you've seen the size of my boobs you would realise how much pain I was in)

Did those drugs affect you tummy at all?

OP posts:
Gobbledigook · 10/11/2005 21:08

No I was fine, but tbh I didn't take much of the diclofenac because I was worried about nausea and sickness - just couldn't have coped with 3 small children, bad back AND sickness! The co-dydramol was enough.

The doctor told me that keeping the right posture but to keep doing all the things you always do (i.e. rather than taking to your bed!). I did buy a new buggy as a result as mine was not helping - too heavy lifting out of the boot on the school run twice a day. So just watch what you are lifting but otherwise keep moving.

katymac · 10/11/2005 21:12

That's what my physio said - keep moving

She did major acupressure and reflexology

But it hurts

Ok, I have had slipped disc with correponding sciatic pain. There is presure on your nerve possibly from a disc this needs to be released. There are some exercises I know for lower back but I have never heard of the pain starting so high up. I have a friend who is a physio who told me that the discs in the upper back are pretty safe cos there is so little movement in the upper body.

Anyway for pain relief I have tried the following;
hot and cold compresses -hot water bottle followed by ice.

Hot bath with Epsom salts (about a handful) -meant to bring down swelling -do a google you will be surprised.

Various painkillers (Codine mainly) and when real bad washed down with a couple of glasses of wine. Probably the best pain killer but not recommended cos often next day you can be worse.
Strongest painkillers without prespriction will be Nurofen Plus (has added Codine) taken together with Paracetemol.

Most important get yourself to a Doc. I had chiropractic treatment and Osteopathic treatment but it wasn't until I got an MRI scan and physio treatment did I start to improve.

katymac · 10/11/2005 21:33

Doing hot & cold (2 min each for 20 mins, two hours apart)

Will try epsom salts (have to buy some)

Physio says the shoulder pain is due to holding myself badly as my leg hurts (the opposing knee is also hurting)

She is very good - I think I need pain killers

Eaney, that's an interesting post. I have been seeing an osteopath since christmas on and off and then in the past six weeks either everyday or every other day as I have been in agonising back and leg pain. DH had enough of seeing me in such a pathetic and painful state and si I saw a orthopaedic surgeon who organised an MRI which diagnosed a slipped disc and disc degeneration. He also referred me to a physiotherapist who has identified from getting me to bend down and then get up that I have a movement based problem which is sorted out by exercises to get me moving the correct way.

I am so off of osteopaths and really am pleased that I have found the root of the problem. You sound pleased with your improvement too.

katymac · 10/11/2005 22:04

I'm only 20 hrs in an so in pain

I'm also very tired (they must be connected)

OP posts:
Eaney · 11/11/2005 19:16

How are you today? Hope you got some relief. It can be awful.

Chickpea I know what you mean I spent a small fortune on Chiropractors and osteopaths. I made sure they were all registered with their various governing bodies.. One actually told me there was no such thing as a trapped nerve. I often wonder if they made matters worse.

My orthopaedic surgeon said that there is a place for chiropractors and osteopaths but it's not with longstanding conditions. He reckoned they could help with recent injuries.

I think Pilates is the way forward for me if I ever find a class and the time.

katymac · 11/11/2005 19:34

I bit better - I found some painkillers from an op I had 2 yrs ago - they are still in date so I've taken them and they seem to work a bit

Thank you for asking

I fancy Pilates too - but only when my leg/hip is better

Since my physio treated it it has reduced to just the hip/bum area - which is great

I went to a Pilates session for 1 1/2 hrs and it was hard as I was in so much pain and very stiff but when I left I felt so much better. I have now done 4 sessions and I am convinced that because the instructor got me moving my spine I have recovered quicker. Believe me, when I walked / staggered into the Pilates studio I was in a really bad way.
