Anyone know any reason why I shouldn't use Medised?

And does it really work?

I never heard of the stuff before, really, but a friend recommended it today. Ds is 2.5 and has a snotty cold. We were all up numerous times in the night yesterday, not that that is anything particularly new, but the idea of it helping him to get a good night's sleep tonight is very appealing.

Just feel a little guilty about using A Sedative, I think. Any info on it other than what it says on the bottle? Thanks.

Beware... sends my DD hyper.

iota · 09/11/2005 17:55

it's not really sedative as such - it's just paracetamol and antihistamine - -the histamine can ave a sedating effect, but it's really there to help clear the nose I think

iota · 09/11/2005 17:57

or maybe I'm wrong

triceratops · 09/11/2005 17:59

I would take it myself if I had a snotty cold. I would not deny my child the same relief unless I knew it was bad for them.

We have a LARGE bottle in our cupboard.

NotQuiteCockney · 09/11/2005 18:01

It may not agree with her, but it's worth trying.

(Antihistamines always make me really cranky and annoyed. I have no idea why. I avoid them like the plague.)

Skyler · 09/11/2005 18:06

I have a big bottle in my cupboard too. I really think it helps my dd when she has a cold. It is worth a try as a good nights sleep will help him to fight the cold as well as giving you all a break. Hope he is better soon.

frannyandzooey · 09/11/2005 18:08

Eek flamesparrow and NQC - that is NOT the effect I am after. Hmm. I guess we will try it and see - are the unpleasant effects you have had quite quick or do they happen later?

My dd - 8 mths - has a horrible cold and cough and is really unhappy. I spoke to the Pharmasist at Boots today who recommended it, he told me that it dried out the snot and helped relieve the cough as well as helping to sleep. I have used it before in a non-cold related situation and sometimes it knocks her out and other times - as Flamesparrow said - it sends her a bit wild and keeps her awake, the Pharmasist said it depends on how they are when you give it to them. I think tonight tho she will just sleep, fingers crossed .

Have given dd1 (now 3) Piriton before (on advice of Paed) to get her to sleep and that worked a treat.

I think the main thing is to get them to sleep and using it for the right reason - ie., cold - in moderation should not make you feel like a bad mother. Using it to knock them out because you are going to a friends for dinner and can't find a baby sitter so have to take them with you, is as far as I'm concerned, the wrong reason

flamesparrow · 09/11/2005 18:11

They seem to happen within about 30 mins... same for sleepiness

Normally the first dose sends her hyper, but the next one knocks her out (probably worn out from the bouncing )

NotQuiteCockney · 09/11/2005 18:11

FaZ, the effect with me is not that fast, but it's not severe, really. Well, maybe DH has a different opinion. They make my head muzzy and make me cranky. The back of my throat feels wrong.

I think it's just me, though. I'd certainly give Medised a try, I keep meaning to get some for my DSes, for the next time a cold is keeping them up. Maybe just give a half dose to try it out, the first time?

fruitful · 09/11/2005 18:17

Medised works on my two. It stops the endless runny nose which must annoy them. With dd it didn't appear to knock her out but it made her feel better and then she could sleep. With ds, it definitely makes him sleep more. Which is what you need when you're sick! Switched to Tixylix when dd was 12mo (there is a tixylix that has the antihistamine in it) cos she hated the taste of medised. Ds not keen either - I put it in his milk.

starandsnowshaker · 09/11/2005 18:23

i think its fab helps with her cold and teething dont use it for sleep really but i does help her get to sleep if shes not very well

frannyandzooey · 09/11/2005 19:02

Thanks all - I have Administered the Dose (snaps rubber gloves a la Nurse Ratchet). He was so exhausted he was asleep within minutes, so it didn't make him hyper (yet). I just hope it will help him sleep for a bit longer tonight, poor love.

So giving it so I can go out and leave him without a babysitter would be bad, you think? It didn't say that on the leaflet, surely they would say if it was wrong...

He only woke up 3 times in the end, which is about what he would do on a usual night, so I feel it did the job. He seemed to have a lot less of a runny nose than I would expect at this stage of a cold, too. I would recommend it from this one experience, but thanks for all those who warned me of potential problems.
