2.9yrs with tonsilitus - when should I worry?

G.P. diagnosed tonsilitus yesterday, but she has got worse. No urine output since yesterday evening, she won't let me pick her up and she is just lying on settee and not responding to anything. She has just had a little bit to drink but not even bothered when her brother climbs on her.

is she on antibiotics?

longwaytogo · 09/11/2005 09:41

yes penacillin

well, it should kick in within 24 hours. If she's still worse then ring the doctor - my dd2 has chest infections all the time and quite often the antibiotic she's been given needs to be changed to another type.
Tonsillitis is so horrible for little ones.
My dd1 had it at about the same age as yours, it was the sickest she's ever been. I hope your dd feels better soon.

piffle · 09/11/2005 09:49

is she drinking at all? Could she be dehydrated.
My son get very ill with tonsilitis when he was a toddler and needed IV antibiotics
But if your dd is keeping her meds down and drinking small amounts regularly then she should be ok, def keep eye on the weeing though, might pay to ring NHS direct althought they'll tell you to go to your GP most likely.
So perhaps ring your surgery and ask for a telephone consult to put your mind at ease?

have to take her back in at 10.30 she has had about half a cup of juice this morning but thats it. even last year when she had bronchilitus she wasn't as limb as this.

Dd was very much like that when she had Tonsilitus but if you are at all concerned she may be dehydrated then I would take her to A&E if you still cannot get her to drink.

Has she had a wee at all today ??

piffle · 09/11/2005 14:11

don't worry about food too much when she's ill like that,
you can use a syringe or spoon to feed her water or juice. Basically anything that they will drink, but sleep is her best bet. But follow your instinct obv...
The only thing about A+E is that it will be a long time out for her It's the thing that always puts me off.

nutcracker · 09/11/2005 14:12

How is her temp ??

Dd's temp was so high when she had it she was hallucinating.

piffle · 09/11/2005 14:13

I knnow also that it a lot easier for me to say that then to watch your little dd be so poorly, I worry like nothing on earth when dd is like that....

longwaytogo · 09/11/2005 14:23

its not the food tht bothers me, but only form of liquid i have managed to get down her. no drink since this morning - she has had one wee. can't get syringe past her teeth for medicine let alone drink

Think you should take her back to dr's or to a walk-in clinic. She really needs to be taking more fluids, have you tried a straw or ice pops. The novelty might be enough to get her going and it could soothe her throat. She does sound a bit out of things and the less she drinks the more so she'll be. If she is having difficulty swallowing even drinks and the medicine then she may need a drip or injection to perk her up. Tonsillitis can be miserable hope she feels better soon.

longwaytogo · 09/11/2005 21:52

right here's the update. She was really poorly earlier but perked up a bit this afternoon, she has drunk a bit and eaten two fromage frais. At the moment she looks like she has a bit of life when she should be in bed fast asleep, but at least she looking better.

Now have diorrhea to contend with though everytime she coughs or sneezes

oh poor dd. Have you tried giving her probiotics to help her tummy. "Live" yoghurts and drinks like actimel may help replace the good bacteria being killed off by the AB's or there are powders available from Health Food stores. Never thought of it until I had Gastroenteritis and AB's recently and now would swear by it. Diaorrhea (sp?) will only add to the dehydration risk so she'll need to drink more.

longwaytogo · 09/11/2005 22:11

she has drunk more this afternoon, but is now refusing to take her antibiotics or calpol and is spitting them out - shes covered, i'm covered, floor covered, lovely mess

geekgrrl · 10/11/2005 16:36

how is she doing today, lwtg?

longwaytogo · 11/11/2005 13:47

ok loosing days now She is doing much better today. we have been out whaey what an achievement seems only place i been this week is the doctors.

She obviously doesnt like the antibiotics as she spits them out and no amount of persuading will do it, so she now will take nothing not even her favourite pink medicine.

She still has the runs, but now she is eating hopefully that will ease.

Thanks you lot for being there.
