Can you snip a wart off? Will it bleed?

Not the nasty kind one might get on your privates, I hasten to add. Dd2 has got some on her face, right by her eye. They have been there ages, but are getting worse by the day. I just want to attack them.

We are getting her a referral, but tbh, she will probably need a general anaesthetic, as she has severe learning disabilities and moves with the speed of a greased whippet- no way could she keep still for treatment. And I can't see her father consenting to a GA, which leaves us nowhere really.

What can I do? Any experience?

Grin Greased whippet

I wouldn't cut them off, especially near her eye.

Have you asked the chemist if there is anything you can use?

Erm, bit of banana skin under a sticky plaster worked when I was a child.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 10/05/2011 19:10

If you can hold her still enough to snip it, then surely you can get it frozen off by a dermatologist? Or were you planning to attack them while she is asleep?

I think the wart goes into the skin, so snipping wouldn't actually remove it.

bigTillyMint · 10/05/2011 19:10

Noooo!

When DD and I had warts - on fingers / knees, we used the method suggested by the specialist when the freezing off didn't work.

Cover wart with duct tape (DD misheard this and then forgot the name, so kept calling it goose tapeGrin). Take off every week or so wash, dry and recover till it goes. It works a treat.

Might look a bit odd on her face though!

Aimsmum · 10/05/2011 19:11

Are they definitely warts and not skin tags? Skin tags can be snipped quite easily but not warts.

I tried to cut one off with nail clippers once, it was agony, bled, then grew back!

I presume you have been referred for liquid nitrogen treatment, both DD and I have had that, it worked for me, but not DD and it is really painful. What finally worked for DD's warts after a year of treatment was using bazooka cream from the chemist, could you try using that in the meantime?

BitOfFun · 10/05/2011 19:16

It's so hard, isn't it? The trouble with cream etc is that it could get in her eye- the warts are practically in her lash line. They are getting so ugly Sad, like small rice crispies. I know it sounds awful, but she is so cute normally, but it's hard to look at her Sad. I'm dreading it just getting worse and worse, to the point where she turns into that Tree Man from a channel five documentary

SO you don't want to go near her eye with cream, but you'll go near it with scissors??Confused

BitOfFun · 10/05/2011 19:21

I dont know what I want really, ginny- I'm just a bit desperate and hoping somebody can tell me something reassuring. I do realize that the scissors idea is mental.

Bugger.

When I was little, 3ish, I had wart like things on my eye, they weren't actually warts but similar (I don't remember it at all now) but my mum took me to the local eye hospital (do you have one near you?) anyway, they saw me that day and where really interested in it all (took photos, brought in students).

Anyway the point is, they gave her the treatment away with us there and then, it was like nailpolish that had to be painted on while I was asleep. So, long story, to basically say, try a local eye hospital/clinic if you have one.

(And I am sure she is still cute Smile)

5inthebed · 10/05/2011 19:27

I think it's harder when they have SN BOF as they don't understand why you're doing certain things.

Could you put cream on her when she is asleep, or is she a light sleeper? I cut DS2s toenails when he is asleep, but he has had a goo dose of melatonin beforehand.

Hope you can get it sorted without resorting to a GA.

BitOfFun · 10/05/2011 19:30

Thanks everyone. Yes, we have got a good eye hospital near us, I hadn't thought of that. I wonder what they'll say if I ring up? I probably need the GP to refer us. It's so bloody annoying though, as it's difficult even taking her to see the GP because she can't wait or sit still for long.

Thanks for listening to me moan Smile

Our eye hospital has an A&E type walk in department, might be worth finding out if yours does.

Good luck Smile

BitOfFun · 10/05/2011 19:33

Oh, it does. I went there with DP once when he had an ulcer in his eye, and they were brilliant. I just wonder if I'd get told off as this isn't an emergency IYSWIM?

My DD scraped a wart off her finger last summer when chalking on the pavement, it bled like fury and has simply grown back.

Do you know what kind of warts they are? The way you describe them makes me wonder if it is molluscum.

Aimsmum · 10/05/2011 19:41

I think given the fact they are so near her eye that you would be worried using cream and that they are getting worse, I think it would be totally fine to go. Especially as it is a child, I am sure they would be happy to have a look and advise.

KurriKurri · 10/05/2011 19:49

If she is referred and they decide to remove them, ask whether sedation is an option - rather than a full GA - would your DP be less anxious about that?

Can you take a photo of them, so that if you go to the GP and she doesn't want them looked at, he might be able to identify what they are and still refer her.

BitOfFun · 10/05/2011 22:53

He's not my DP, Kurri (thankfully)- but yes, hopefully there will be some kind of sedation option. The photo is a good idea, thanks- you are right that I can't be sure what they are, Red.

Valpollicella · 10/05/2011 22:57

BoF, just turn up with her - they (ime) are more than happy to see children without a referral, and even if they don't carry out any treatment right away, they will be able to advise if they are warts or something else.

Valpollicella · 10/05/2011 22:59

And yes, do not try to snip warts off.

I knocked one off my little finger once in a vair important meeting. It bled like a very small but haemophilliac stuck pig all over the very important paperwork

Confused
