Which option were you thinking of? Mirena? IUD? Implant? Essure? Vasectomy? female sterilisation?

I had to go in for a laproscopy (to investigate suspected endometriosis) last year and chose to get sterlised at the same time. They made two tiny incisions - one in my tummy button and one at the top of my pubic bone. Both healed completely without leaving any noticeable scarring.

I was able to go home the same day but felt pretty rotten for about 2-3 days post surgery. However, I think this was mainly due to the fact that they have to inject air into your abdoment for the laproscopy and it takes several days for this to disapate. The pressure and bubbling from the air in my chest and abdomen was pretty painful and uncomfortable for a couple of days but the pain from the actual surgery was minimal and I was up and about and driving again within 3 days.

The worst bit for me was feeling naseous as a result of the general anaesthetic bu they were able to give me plenty of anti-sickness drugs.

sounds horrible - why are these things never simple

I was sterilised nearly 10 years ago

I have 3 scars, a line under my belly button and two sort of dots (I presume where the keyhole bits were done) below that but on either side so my tummy button is the top of a triangle to try and help describe it! I'm sure there is another one much lower down as well

Didn't really have any major problem, I was either first or second one down from the ward and managed to go home late afternoon. Only just though, a friend had told me that if I was sick, they would keep me in. I just about managed to not throw up.

They were trying to get us to get our daughter to stay overnight with someone in case she jumped on my stomach, but we managed fine, she was about 4 and a half years old, yes, I remember she had just started primary school in the Aug and I had my op in the Oct.

Bit uncomfortable to sleep for a few days. Don't remember being in a lot of pain. Then after a few days I ended up with something called erysipelas. The doctor said you can get it from an opend wound so I must have got it through the surgery somehow. My scalp started off being very tender, really struggled to wash my hair. Went to doctor, got some painkillers etc. Next morning, my whole face had swelled up, I looked like I had been beaten up, but with a red face instead of bruises. About a weeks worth of penicillin and it was all sorted!

Think it took a while for periods to settle back into a regular pattern again

Sterilisation also has a 1 in 200 failure rate.

you might want to consider this - avoids the GA

dont fancy that much either (sigh)

Edwardsbella - it really wasn't that bad. The worst of it was a result of the laperoscopy. A sterilisation on its own is even more straightforward. Nothing some good strong painkillers (which sadly I can't take!) won't handle.

To be honest, if i hadn't needed to go for surgery anyway I probably wouldn't have considered it but now I'm so glad i had it done. Just think, after 20+ years of messing about one kind of contraception or another I never have to worry about it again. I think that was well worth 3 days of discomfort and a bit of pain.

i was sterilised during my 3rd c section, after i had my second baby i went to my doctors to ask about steriliation and he wouldnt entertain the idea was told it was much simpler to send my partner instead for the snip. hence baby number 3 lol.
