By the way this is not the "question" from my earlier thread but can anyone recommend an eye specialist in the London area? I am not quite sure what the issue is but my optician wants me to get seen pronto. Many thanks

There is Moorfields eye hospital near Old Street in London, they may be able to advise and point you in the right direction.HTH

goingbacktowork · 08/05/2011 21:22

They will not recommend anyone - no hospital is allowed to hence the question to see if anyone has seen anyone theey thought was good. My GP has no idea at all.

They also have a private section which they have an internet site for, this might show the leading consultant for your situation. What condition are you being referred for if you dont mind sharing?

Jagsy · 08/05/2011 21:26

Sorry just re-read your post, you're not sure of exact issue, but is it related to anything e.g diabetes etc?

pooka · 08/05/2011 21:27

Mr Christopher Hammond - works at The Sloane in Beckenham and the PRUH in Bromley. Really nice guy.

goingbacktowork · 08/05/2011 21:35

It looks like it might be retina damage related due to macular changes (whatever that means)

Ok, my PIL has macular degenration which was diagnosed by Moorfields via GP so done on NHS rather than private, this was many years ago so don't have any consultant name to recommend, sorry.

Hope you get some joy from pooka recommendation

I think Mr Jonothan Dowler is a retinal specialist and sees private patients but have not seen him myself.

Mr Spalton at King Edward VII hospital.

I would go to moorfields on city road. Go to your gp and ask for a refer and book reference - they can refer you to the correct department that way, then you just go online with the reference and book the appointment.

Do you want NHS or private?
Moorfields does both

Olivetti · 09/05/2011 10:00

Mr Tom Williamson, Retinal Specialist. Really good, and very nice. Treated me for a retinal condition related to pregnancy. St Thomas's or the London Clinic, NHS or private.

equinox · 09/05/2011 10:14

Moorfields are brilliant.

goingbacktowork · 09/05/2011 10:34

Private I think as she wants me seen SOON (underlined in paperwork) and not to wait weeks. That is the xmas fund depleted then.

I am attending Moorfields it the best eye hospital in London if you want NHS. As the other ladies said get a referral from your GP :)

iamabadger · 09/05/2011 13:12

Most eye hospitals have an eye emergency service, including Moorfields. My optician sent me straight there when I had a detached retina, he just faxed them some details and I went straight there from the opticians. You can also walk in if it's that urgent.

DBennett · 09/05/2011 22:45

"Soon" is a standard term used when a referral has been triaged as needing to be seen faster than would it would be routinely.

Of course, the consultant who receives your referral may disagree but I wouldn't rush down the private route as the use of that word normally would go along with a shortened waiting time.
