DS (4) has infected chicken pox spot and temp of 39.1. A&E?

My 4 year-old DS has had chicken pox. He's well over it but he's still a bit scabby. Today we noticed one of the spots on his hand was infected - it has come up into a lump with about a 10p size patch of red around it and a white head. We managed to get rid of the puss and put germolene on it. However, this afternoon he's started feeling poorly, just wanting to be in bed and very listless. I've just taken his temperature and it's 39.1. Do you think it could be connected to the infected spot? Do you think I should take him to A&E in case of some sort of serious infection?

I would phone the out of hours doctor - please don't take an infectious child to an A&E dept where loads of sick people are.....

Give him calpol and neurofen and phone

Yes i think you should. I work on a hospital ward and we currently have a child in with infected chicken pox. It needs checking at least.

Does the infected spot have red lines running from it up his arms? If so, yes you need to be seen but A&E may not be the right place, out of hours (where you can be quarantined) would be a better choice.

If he spots has scabbed over he's not infectious is he ?? The patient we have is certainly not isoltated.

RancerDoo · 07/05/2011 20:48

I think I would too. Have a look at the spot as well - is the red area around it spreading?

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/05/2011 20:48

I think a temp during the recovery of chicken pox is supposed to be cehcked anyway isn't it, even without an inffected spot.

I would and if not A&E then a walk in centre or something. But absolutely get him seen.

when my DD was in hospital (with an infection that was no infectious iyswim) the ward had a number of children with infectious diseases who just kept to their own rooms. I presume those kids came in through A&E, and if you arrive there and announce your child has CP they will find somewhere appropriate for you to wait. Just go in, even if he is still infectious they can deal with it.

This child has an infection, he is not infectious. Chicken pox is infectious from before the spots appear until they have scabbed over.

I would def get him seen, either by out of hours or go to A&E, whichever works best for you with an ill child. Give him what you can to reduce his temperature and keep him drinking in the meantime.

Thats what i thought Fessa.
