12 month boosters and MMR given together - severe reaction (not an MMR debate)

12 month boosters given with the MMR jab, although red book states boosters at 12 months and MMR at 13 - 15 months. she was given jabs on wednesday and by thursday lunch was vomiting constantly until there was nothing left then she was retching. she couldnt even keep water down. early friday morning she started with a temp of 39.5 (and slept all day)which was consistent until early this morning (saturday)when she was able to keep water down, she has gradually been able to tolerate milk and a little food but has now developed extreame diarrhea to the extent that i am having to remove her nappy over the toilet as the contents is like a glass of water, if she lays down it just pours out all over her. she has visably lost weight and looks dreadful. The doctor says some children have these reactions to vacines but i cant help wondering if the extream reaction is due to overloading her with too many vacines all at once? incidently my friends son had the same reaction and is still unwell 3 weeks afetr his jabs......any thoughts

tThat sounds awful nosleep. I'm not really sure what to say - it does sound like a reaction and is an example of why so many people are concerned about giving all these jabs at once just for convenience! Make sure you report it youself - doctors don't always officially report them. There is a website I think you can do it on - I'm sure someone else on here will provide you with a link! As far as your daughter goes I would just try to make sure she drinks regularly because severe diarrhoea like that can dehydrate little ones very quickly. I hope she feels better soon. Please keep us posted.

gkys · 07/05/2011 20:45

OP Your poor daughter, and poor you, have you sought medical advice today, personally I would want this poor little one checked over by the medics, they can dehydrate so quickly.

I would try dioralite to replace lost salts amd sugars too, ,

it may be that she had something brewing and the jabs triggered the immune system into over drive.

Am with bubble report it, let us know how you get on

whatsleep · 07/05/2011 23:14

thanks bubbleymummy and gkys we were refered to the walk in center tonigh where she was examined, not dehydrated yet but given rehydration drinks. dr said its a stomach bug and certainly not conected to the jabs....i just feel it is such a huge coincidence when she was totally healthy and well 24 hours before the jabs Hmm dont think medical professionals would admit their error in causing these terrible side effects. will take her to the gp first thing monday if she is still unwell, just hate so see my baby like this Sad

If they refuse to link this to her vaccinations you can make your own Yellow Card report about it, you don't have to be a health professional to do so.

ScarlettWalking · 07/05/2011 23:33

How worrying for you and awful for her. It's definately a reaction from what you describe. How is her fever now?

gkys · 08/05/2011 07:25

morning whatsleep how are things today? hope your dd has improved,

go ahead with your complaint, and you said your friends dc has been ill too? encourage her to do the same,

bubbleymummy · 08/05/2011 07:40

Oh of course it could NEVER be related to the vaccines Hmm Please report it yourself otherwise no one may ever know that there are potential side effects like this. Perhaps it may change the vaccine schedule again if there are enough reports - not that I wish these types of reaction on lots of children!

whatsleep · 08/05/2011 09:10

morning!! thanks for all your messages this alone makes me feel more positive. she looks much better in herself this morning and is starting to babble and smile again. Fluid wise she is refusing to drink the rehydration drinks dispite me hiding it in several drinks!! dont blame her though they are pretty disgusting!! will just have to see how things go today, half expected to be sent to the hospital with her last night as the amount of fluids her body was loosing was rediculious........any ideas of how to mask the taste of the dehydration powders so she will drink one????

nottirednow i totally agree it is possible that she was brewing something, but we have had no contact with my friends child. it just seems like a big coinsidence that the two children had the same illness 24 hours after the jabs. she is loving the crisps and lemonaide thankyou - great idea.....think we will be eating lots of rubbish this week to get some meat back on her bones.....easter chocolates prepair to be devoured!!!! thankyou

Yesterday things got worse, she stopped feeding totally And was sleepy all day, took her to the doctor who sent us to hospital. They diagnosed gastroenteritious (sp!!) and viral tonsillitis, her throat was so sore she was not wanting to feed. Treatment given so she is feeding again....coinsidently my friends son also ended up with tonsillitis too.....but docs still sure no connection to the jabs!

Sorry for this terrible reaction, you must be worried sick.

I also be very, very suspicious of any doctor saying with certainty "it's not the jabs".

How the hell would they know - just like that?

I don't know a heck of a lot about this, but perhaps you could cast about for info on "repairing" the gut after such a trauma to the system. Perhaps there are treatments, enzymes and so on, that are known to help. but I know there are protocols, somewhere out there.

Also may I advise you to takes notes of everything that happens to your child from the moment of the jab and ongoing.

Gooseberrybushes · 10/05/2011 12:43

Also I wouldn't want ABs - don't know if you've been prescribed them - but would that even be helpful with such a bad gut?

Gooseberrybushes · 10/05/2011 12:45

"children do get bugs at the same time as vaccination"

it's true.. usually afterwards

Hmm
mrspear · 10/05/2011 12:48

Whatsleep firstly i hope your dd gets better soon.

The only time my ds had any reaction was at the 12 month one no where near as bad but it certainly bothered him - loss of appetite, sleepy and high temperature. But the MMR second dose (i.e given on its own) he was fine. Hmm

whatsleep · 10/05/2011 12:49

They said the tonsillitis is viral so AB,s no good but looking into it now we a re home it's difficult to differentiate between viral and bacterial. The gastro problem should just clear with plenty of fluids but she has continued with the diareah now she has started feeding again, poor little thing she looks totLly fed up :(

OP posts:
mrspear · 10/05/2011 12:49

Oh and the reason they moved the MMR first dose forward is due to measles being "everywhere" according to my surgery nurse

I assume they asked you to consent to both jabs being given together?
