DS vomiting while eating

mammabearx4 · 07/05/2011 13:58

Hi,i have posted on several sites about this but all replies help sort out a poss diagnosis. My DS who is 11 now, has had incidents of sometimes mild, sometimes severe vomiting whilst eating. He has tested pos on SPT to egg 2 but ok with baked/ well cooked, milk ( just outgrown in March neg SPT now), barley 2, and rast tests to almonds and peanuts. He also has tree and grass pollen allergies, cat & dog, dust and also asthma.
The thing is i am finding it difficult to pinpoint what is causing this,he can eat the same foods and sometimes he vomits sometimes has no ill effects.
I have mentioned EE and GERD to docs but all DS has had is a barium swallow about a year ago to test for hiatus hernia which was normal.
I am aware of x contamination in foods and do not give him may contains etc
And the vomiting does not always occur to foods bought or eaten out.
He says he gets a lump in his throat and knows the food is not going down and so rushes off to vomit.Odd thing is he can usually come back and continue to finish the meal off, which is why allergy doesnt make sense. With his nut allergy the symptoms are obvious and no way would he want to go back and eat the food !
We went back to docs last week after DS vomited to a sausage roll and chicken wings with bbq sauce on separate occasions. He was prescribed with Gaviscon Advance, after one mouthfull he gagged and went to spit it out.He said he would rather put up with vomiting than take that again !
He has sats all this week so will struggle to get hm to docs again.
We are going to hospital in a few weeks to see doc as DS also had some incidents of heart palpitations also while eating, and later hiccups and nausea,& tummy ache.An ECG came back as normal.
My DS is quite small and skinny for his age, but docs are not worried about this as he is growing.
The vomiting episodes can be mild whereby just a small amount of mucous comes up, and more severe whereby the entire stomach contents are vomited, to the worst case scenario when it gets down to bile being vomited.
I am also aware of something called an asthma plug, when kids vomit up mucous that is caused by asthma, but as this always happens while eating i am not sure if this is the case.DS NEVER has delayed vomiting or diaorrhea with his symptoms.Sometimes he gets the lump in throat feeling or mild stuck in chest feeling without it ending in vomiting.
Any thoughts would be useful, many thanks.

Had he had an endoscopy??

Could he have a narrowing in his oesophagus (sp?)

I knew several 9albiet older) people who have had this.

mammabearx4 · 07/05/2011 14:19

No an endoscopy has never been suggested.Im not sure whether narrowing of the oesophagos would have shown up in a barium swallow tho ? Do you ?

OP posts:
Becaroooo · 07/05/2011 14:43

Not sure tbh.

Its not a pleasant proceedure - its invasive - maybe thats why???

I was sedated for mine (and it was ok) but I would imagine they would try the non invasive things first maybe?

mammabearx4 · 07/05/2011 14:54

Thats just it tho, the only thing in over 8 years of this going on was the barium swallow and the Gaviscon the other week.I think if DS was vomiting all the time after every meal then more would have been done by now.I did mention that my mum had chrons disease as thus fan run in families but he doesnt get dioarrhea,so prob not that anyway.
He did used to suffer with a lot of tummy aches when younger but i assume that was the milk allergy.

If it were my son I would be going back to the GP and asking for a referrral to a gastroenterologist and an endoscopy asap.

Crohns can make sufferers very sick and i have known of sufferers ending up being tube fed through ng tube Sad

This has been going on far too long...time to get stroppy I'm afraid! Smile IME wrt the NHS, those who make the most noise get the fastet/ best treatment Sad

mammabearx4 · 07/05/2011 18:38

I agree it has been going on too long. The thing is the symptoms are shortlived and as soon as he has vomited he is fine, not poorly at all after, and inbetween he is ok.When my mum had chrons she was unwell a lot of the time and lost a lot of weight, so i dont think it is that.Mind you, she was in he 60s when she was diagnosed which is why it took so long to find out what was wrong with her as chrons is found generally either in younger kids or people in their 20 s and 30s i think. She ended up having most of her bowel taken out unfortunately, but she is no longer with us or else i could ask her what she thinks.
I just want a doc, any doc to say we think it is this, but instead they just seem ro keep writing down what i tell them and nothing gets resolved.I think maybe an endoscopy is what is needed and DS will be put to sleep for the procedure so the discomfort will not be for long.At least will know once and for all if there is any damage to his eosophagus which would indicate Eosonophil eosophagitus ( white blood cells or eosonophils attach themselves to the wall of the eosophagus causing scarring, and is asscociated with food allergies) or whether it is some kind of reflux or asthma related. Then at least we could treat it accordingly.

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your mother, mamma

He aboslutely needs an endoscopy IMO....I was dreading it but I dont really remember anything about it (thank goodness!)

Good luck x

My brother (28) was vomiting after food up to six times a day. Turns out he had an ulcer - even after being told he hadn't, then told he had but didn't react to the treatment as he wasn't given the right kind. He's now fine and takes two tablets a day - instant relief.

I know it's unlikely at your son's age that it's an ulcer, but is it possible?

Alternatively, could it be a problem with him thinking there is a lump in his throat? I hate to use the term psychological - but often issues with swallowing can be.

mammabearx4 · 07/05/2011 22:55

Unlikely to be an ulcer as he is too young. This has been going on since he was just a toddler,so not psychological.I have seen it at the moment it happens and it is an involuntary action. He knows to run to toilet now as he recognises the symptoms.
He recognises the lump in his throat as a similar thing happens when he has anaphalactic reactions to nuts, but that results in choking and breathing probs rather than vomiting. However we cant rule out the poss that it is an allergic reaction, poss x contamination, its just very difficult to pinpoint what to.

This might be worth reading on ulcers in children? I only say it because my brother was like your son, running to the loo to vomit during or after eating

heartburn.about.com/od/pepticulcers/a/child_ulcers.htm

mammabearx4 · 07/05/2011 23:48

Yeah thanks i read that, tho it does say in severe cases that you have black tarry stools and he def doesnt have that.So many things have similar symptoms so it makes it hard to figure out. Will see what this doc says in couple of weeks time and i am also keeping a diary of any reactions. Thanks for the replies.

well...yes and no Grin

I am on meds now every day as I have no ulcer, no HH etc.

I have really severe GERD which there isnt really any treatment for Sad

A food diary/symptom diary is a really good idea.

The HP test (for ulcers) is really non invasive...just involves blowing into a tube! Might be worth it to eliminate it as a cause????

mammabearx4 · 08/05/2011 19:38

Hi Beckaroo, sorry there is no magical cure for you.DS not vomited this week, it does seem worse when his hayfever is bad like the other week, and app GERD can be worse when allergies or asthma is playing up, so im inclining to think that it is that.I will post when we have been to see the doc at the hospital, thanks for the replies.

Hi mamma just to say I have a toddler with an oesophogeal stricture/narrowing, which became apparent at weaning. From talking to various hcps at various levels, it can appear at all sorts of ages, and quite suddenly. A nurse at the hosp was telling me of a teenager who had recently been in with the problem, and GPS etc had assumed he was anorexic.
Does he get noisy breathing when he has the problem?
DC1 has now had a number of "stretches" under GA and is able to eat a lot of things, although is not able to be left to it in the same way as other toddlers and we still have to take care over food size. She is awaiting further tests at Great Ormond Street, to try and find the cause of the problem as it is still not yet known.
Funnily enough ( obv not funny) she was sick twice yesterday, on bread and orange, when she had not been sick at all for the month before. There is not always a lot of rationalle to what does and doesnt make her ill.

A barium swallow should show a narrowing, but it didnt with our dc.

mammabearx4 · 09/05/2011 22:27

Hi Sillysow,no he doesnt get noisy breathing at all.In fact my DS vomited again today during his tea.He was eating chicken strips with southern style coating on,i had checked the label for allergens and it seemed safe so dont think it was that, plus he has had similar plenty times before and not vomited. He said the food got stuck in his throat so he had a drink to try and force it down but this just made it worse and he had to go and vomit it up.I was upstairs putting clothes away at the time and heard him being sick so came down to check on him.
He was fine afterwards as usual, and said it didnt feel like one of his allergic reactions.I have written it down in the food diary i am keeping to show the doctor when we go in a few weeks. The only difference is it was from morrisons not sainsburys (i like sainsburys as their allergy labelling is very good ) but as i said no mention of any of his known allergens, but cant help but get a bit jumpy when he reacts like this.

DS had southern fried chicken strips for tea last night.Food got stuck again, he tried some water to push it down but didnt work and vomited twice.
Dropped him at school for breakfast this mornong and teacher rang about 40 mins later to say DS vomited twice after toast ( checked previousy for known allergens )took some gaviscon up and persuaded him to take some, hoping he will be ok now.
