I had a follow up appointment this morning to check out my knee which I injured 6 months ago playing netball. Many of you will remember this as I was on crutches for ages and posted here about it.

Anyway I wore the same loose baggy trousers that I had worn before to an appointment with this consultant and he examined me then perfectly fine. But this morning he insisted I take my trousers off even though I pointed this out.

He said he couldn't examine my knee properly if I had my trousers on so his nurse and him stood there waiting for me to remove my obviously very offensive garment. I was not offered a gown or a sheet to put over my nether regions so I insisted that they give me something as I wasn't sitting there in my knickers whilst he pulls my leg in all directions, thank you very much. The nurse was put out that she had to unlock a cupboard and rummage around for a sheet but she did eventually find one. Meanwhile the arsey consultant is standing there with his arms folded like I am a real nuisance.

It got the appointment off to a very bad start and the air was heavy with embarrassment on both sides I think. Is it me or was it out of order to expect me to lay on the couch and be examined flashing my knickers (actually it was a thong which was even more cringeworthy)???

As for fancying, well, my ortho surgeon is the sexiest Frenchman I EVER laid eyes on. Ooo, was he a tasty treat.

Years later I met him by chance in Chamonix whilst climbing w/my then 'off' boyfriend. And whaddya know, he (the surgeon) was also divorced.

Cue torrid weeklong affair. .

misdee · 07/11/2005 16:14

QE he probably did fancy you

npm seriously, complain, patient should be comfortable with being examined, if that means u wanting a bit of modesty to cover your knickers up ,then it should be.

expatinscotland · 07/11/2005 16:15

It's deffo possible, misdee .

Pennies · 07/11/2005 16:15

No need to swear at me QE - just let the guy do his job rather than quibbling over his interntions.

You did ask for opinions. Sorry if you don't like mine.

misdee · 07/11/2005 16:16

exp[at, tell us more, you have dropped a few hints of this week long torrid affair before, and i am intruiged lol.

Tortington · 07/11/2005 16:20

arsewipes why is it doctors always treat you like a fking nuisance?

hotmama1 · 07/11/2005 16:21

If QE felt uncomfortable - then makes no difference if the stroppy doc or nurse thought she was being unreasonable (as shown by body language etc)as a matter of courtesy a drape should have been offered to cover her nether bits etc. I'm with QE on this one - as I wouldn't fancy flashing my cellulite saddlebags at anyone - and even if I had sexy pins!

QueenEagle · 07/11/2005 16:21

Pennies I didn't ask for opinions on whether this doc fancied me or not.

I asked whether it was appropriate that I should have had to be examined in my knickers, when it hadn't been necessary at at least 4 previous examinations.

Pennies - how many times does it need it explained to you - this is about QE's feelings NOT the doctor's feelings! Nobody cares what he thinks or feels. It is the fact that he was unprofessional and insensitive to perfectly normal feelings of embarassment that is the issue here.
And name calling and insulting QE was totally out of order. Giving your opinion in one thing, insulting her is another.

aloha · 07/11/2005 16:23

I remember refusing to strip to my vest and knickers for the school medical at primary school!

HRHQoQ · 07/11/2005 16:30

oh god is there another indiot in the house???

QU - I think that's disgraceful, you should have at the very least been offered a blanket to cover your nether regions, and expecting you to take them off in front of him isn't on too. on the ocassions I've had to strip off to my undies I've always been offerend privacy to strip off and a blanket.

Well the ex wanker bf and I had planned to go climb some limestone cliffs in a place called Buoux and in another place called Cimai in the south of France and any other place we found that struck our fancy.

So we bought tickets months in advance, arranged time off, etc. Now the ex used to climb lots w/his friend 'Ben'. Fair enough, but 'Ben' started climbing w/an ex-shag of my boyfriend's called 'Beth'. She started muscling in a lot on us at the climbing gym whilst we trained for the trip - the ex bf was a MUCH better climber than I ever was - and at first I blew it off but it started to annoy me. Still I didn't say anything to the bf b/c well what was the point of that. Until I found her in our loft one day when I came home from work. She was waiting for ex to finish his shift - he was an A&E doc. She'd never given back his key! And he wasn't at all bothered. I'll bet!

So the man and I had a few rows and I was like, 'B*gger this, we're through.' Again. And I arranged to move out after we got back. But we had the tix to go to France and I was gonna be damned if I'd let her ass spoil my trip, especially b/c none of them spoke any French.

Things went from bad to worse once we arrived and rather than feel miserable or argue I wound up calling one of my host brothers from when I first lived in France. He lived in Chamonix with his wife and two kids so they invited me to come and stay w/them instead of just the couple of days I planned to spend w/them at the end of the trip. So I ditched those losers adn off I went.

I was having a walk one day and I heard my name being spoken, but in accented English. I turned and there was 'Eric', the surgeon. Quelle surprise!

He'd just climbed some minor peaks around there and was just enjoying the rest of his holiday, his first after his divorce. We had a few drinks and then I spent the better part of one week with him - much to my host brother's delight (he was my first).

Then it was time at last to meet the losers for the return. Only I showed up at the train station in Eric's flash Audi and we shared a long goodbye kiss . He had wanted to drop me off. And I had loads of nice gifts to take home, including some lovely lingerie. Good memories, too .

The ex was like, 'Who's that old man?' I just grinned from ear to ear and said, 'Smooth as Tennessee whiskey, sweet as California wine . . . '

expatinscotland · 07/11/2005 16:39

QE,
I'm even given privacy to get undressed by the nurse when I go for a smear.

You have every right to feel as you do!

misdee · 07/11/2005 16:41

what a story! its like a fantasy lol.9not saying it is, but u know what i mean)

QueenEagle · 07/11/2005 16:41

expat - love that story, what a brilliant two fingers up to the "losers"!

expatinscotland · 07/11/2005 16:42

So yeah, he fancied me. Hey, they may be medics, but they're still blokes!

He deffo made my Top 10, misdee. In fact, he's no. 2 .

expatinscotland · 07/11/2005 16:45

They got rained on for almost the whole trip. LOL! And they had 'language difficulties'. I told the ex the language of love needed no translation. Teehee. I can still remember his little rages, 'You f(*ked him, didn't you?!' 'Aw, now don't talk about amour like that, my pet . . . '

Pennies · 07/11/2005 16:50

My point is that when we go to the doc we should expect some kind of disrobing. It comes with the territory. Sounds to me like your doc was trying to give you a thorough examination and was doing a good job to me.

As for making you feel uncomfortable, well that's unfortunate and regretable. HOwever, it's just a fact that some great docs don't have a great bedside manner but stil do a fantastic job - often in the face of considerable and unnecessary adversity. Likewise the many Dr. Kildare's of this world are rubbish. Abrupt doc who sorts me out, or a bit of fluff who doesn't do me any good? I know which I'd prefer.

I've said my piece - I speak as I find. Sorry if it offends so many of you. Oh the joys of a public forum...

HRHQoQ · 07/11/2005 16:51

oh get a life pennies - try reading the original post properly and you'll see she's not complaining about his skills.....

crazydazy · 07/11/2005 17:00

I just want to say that I too think its very wrong and even if he is a doctor or not what right does he have to see your underwear? I can totally see where QE is coming from and some of us do object to total strangers having full view of our underwear - although others obviously don't mind!!!!

QueenEagle · 07/11/2005 21:29

S'pose I should thank my lucky stars I did actually put any knickers on this morning. Now that would have been a close shave

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 07/11/2005 21:49

Pennies, if you go to the dentist, you expect to open your mouth, not to show him your toes. If you go to have your knee seen to and it's been OK to wear trousers several times previously, why on earth would you assume the doctor wants you down to your kecks?!

muma3 · 07/11/2005 21:59

i thinkits outrageous i have had a knee complaint where the soft tissue behind the knee cap was dislodged (cant remember the name ) and at no point did i have to strip off. no matter what he was doing or where he should have manners . they can have all kinds of qualifications but to be polite is a must and most complaints about docs are because of there manners and lack of communication sympathy goes out to you QE hun xx

HuggyBear · 07/11/2005 22:09

I had to have a check up and smear this morning and the doctor gave me the privacy to undress behind a screen, gave me something to cover myself with and asked if i was conmfortable with the whole exam - thats how a doctor should act. QE's doctor was unproffessional i think, part of his job is to make the patient feel comfortable and he didnt even have basic manners, id have complained.

QueenEagle · 08/11/2005 08:46

Everythime I have seen this doc he has been brusque; on one of my visits he told me that if I were to do certain activities on my knee "then I would fuck it up." He actually used these words and I was quite taken aback. Part of me felt that I liked his direct approach and no nonsense manner but I really do now feel he is just a bit over the top.
