What can I give ds1 to perk him up after a virus?

Ds1 has recently recovered from a double whammy of heavy cold and nasty stomach bug. He still has a hacking cough and although he's no longer being sick or got the runs, his poo is very pale so the stomach clearly is still unhappy. He's very tired and listless and still a bit off his food (he's lost loads of weight) and I was wondering if there were some kind of tonic that was good for kids. I take Floradix myself and it says it's fine for kids, but I was wondering if anyone knew of anything specifically that might help. Thanks.

I gave dd metatone once (a vitamin b tonic).

I give my dd Minadex most winters. Have done since she was little.

from a health shop you could try Bioforce Echinacea for children, it boosts immune system and and helps ear infection/sore throat/runny nose as well.
Solgar ABCdophilus is good bacteria for children, add to juice or milk, boosts immune system, helps tummy and bowels, counteracts negative effects of any antibiotics.
Bioforce ivy-thyme...excellant for coughs, and thinning mucus, great for chest.
Solgar kangavites are good quatily kids chewy vitamins, not overly loaded with sugar or sweetners like lots of other brands can be.
I am a nutritionist and own a small health shop in Ireland...just ask if you want any more advice

Thanks for these. Gloworm - I've got him on probiotics already and they seem to have helped so I'm just looking for a general boost and appetite stimulant. Will have a look for the Solgar vitamins as they sound like a good thing to have in the house.

fruit smoothie:

banana, adds great texture and flavour most kids love
kiwi, rich in vit C
apple
mango

this one goes down a treat with my two.
dd is only 2, so she has it quite thick so it doesnt spill.
ds is a bit older so we add some fresh tropical juice to his, to water it down a bit.

wilbur · 08/11/2005 12:42

That sound lovely gloworm, I have a mango in the fridge so will try it for tea.

according to an article in todays' times gatorade /lucozade is really good

cardQUEENcod · 08/11/2005 12:45

"
A sports drink may help a child with viral gastroenteritis who is vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea. A study presented to the American College of Gastroenterology last week indicated that, compared with conventional ?oral replenishment solutions?, isotonic sports drinks such as Gatorade were highly effective. ?They seem to work very well and really might do the trick until kids feel better,? says the study?s author, Satish Rao, a professor of medicine at the University of Iowa.

Gloworm, I have a question for you. My daughter has molloscum on her legs. I posted last week how it was driving me mad. I have been putting tea tree oil directly on to the spots. It has improved the ones that had burst vastly, but the other are just raised spots still. Any advice?

gloworm · 08/11/2005 18:59

assumpta, i would heep using TT 4 times a day,
on another thread someone said they curedit with manuka honey/or cream in 2 weeks!

assumpta · 09/11/2005 15:49

Gloworm, what did they do with the honey. Did the child eat it or have it rubbed into spots?

gloworm · 09/11/2005 16:58

i would imagine both eat and apply to skin.
