Low Iron levels

I'm a vegetarian but eat a very well balanced diet. Shocked that I've just had a master iron studies report come back saying I have an iron deficiency. More so that my GP didn't say anything to me about it - I just got the report!

It says my transferrin saturation is 10% and I know this is extremely low.

Anyone else have this problem.

With me its my ferritin level -recording the lowest possible. Not a vegetarian and eat a really healthy diet with loads of green veg and eggs as well as meat.So GP says either malabsortion or losing somewhere? Got to go for some outpatient tests including endoscope and waiting for appts.Have to say 3 weeks of double iron a day and I'm beginning to feel a lot better-altho it's upsetting my guts somewhat but told it's most important to get level up before anything else.Apart from alot of stress last year nothing in lifestyle changed so not sure how long I've been wandering around with it so low?
Not too sure on procedure for transferrin but hope you get sorted soon -the practice nurse picked up on my result and rang me or I would have been another couple of weeks waiting for GP to get back fom hols. She got me staight onto iron and to see other doctor and got ball rolling.Apparently they don't always find a reason so trying not to worry too much- an at least feeling more human again compared to last few weeks. What were your symptoms?

Hello star
No symptoms - just routine testing which has picked this up. There is a history of celiac and crohns in my family so I'm quite concerned about that. I've actually got an endoscope test on Wednesday this week. Wish I understood a bit more about the different iron studies results I got back from the doc.

Not looking forward to the endoscope but not got a date for that yet.Got barium enema in 2 weeks time but got a feeling it's more stomach /upper gastric area thats the problem and all the fasting and purging for barium a waste of time but at least GP taking it seriously and will just have to think of it as a summer de-tox! My symptoms were odd chest pains and breathlessness- and was starting to get tinnitus which can occurr with very low iron levels apparently. Good luck for Wedsnesday.
