moreandmore could you tell me who you saw and in which area? I suffer from the same problem and would like to get specialist treatment but not sure whether to go private or try the NHS.

Thanks.

I live in East Sussex...where are you?

August5 · 02/05/2011 22:26

I'm in North London but there is a Nuffield hospital nearby so I might do some research into that. Thanks anyway, I feel I now know what kind of treatment to look out for.

moreandmore · 03/05/2011 20:52

Hi August 5 - yes, you should call the Nuffield and find out if they have a woman's physio. It is entirely different from your regular physio. If you get to speak to the right department, and get a name, ask if that person also works in the NHS. Then, either go and see them privately, or go back to GP and ask to be referred to that person whichever NHS hospital they work at.

Does that make sense?!

Thanks for that, useful piece of advice. How many sessions did you need and how long was it before you saw a noticeable improvement?

moreandmore · 04/05/2011 14:47

I had one session where she prodded around, told me what's what and gave me exercises to do (also a leaflet detailing them). I then got a NSH referral, saw her colleague about a month(?) later and she said she was really pleased with the progress. She agreed to call me a few weeks later to see how I was getting on and for me to decide whether I wanted to go back. When we spoke, I decided I needed one more session - i'd had two small pee incidents (mainly through unexpected laughter) and I figured another session wouldn't hurt.

The key is to do the exercises properly and regularly, and then to start lifting pelvic while you do everything e.g lift baby. So hard to remember but the more often it's usefully engaged, the stronger it will be in the right situation.

I don't know what the service will be like where you are, but I was really impressed. And, I suppose, it also depends on how weak your muscles are etc.

How many months is it since you've had your baby?

August5 · 04/05/2011 19:56

I'm 14 months postnatal with DC2, also suffered severe spd from which I am about 80-90 % recovered and I feel that the missing link to my complete recovery is my pelvic floor. I still can't figure out how to do the exercises properly. I still feel that I haven't got my "body back", would love to be really active again. Anyway what you're saying is really encouraging and I'm hopeful that I can improve.

How many children have you had?

moreandmore · 07/05/2011 15:19

Sorry August5, forgot to check this thread

A physio will definitely help you do the exercises properly - and it's pointless doing them wrong.

Pilates would help - I do that twice a week

I've only had the one child but i'm 42...

But don't give up, because it's absolutely possible to work at, and get back, your stamina and body

Good luck

went back to pysio for follow up yesterday - all loads better. she's now recommended a stimulator thingy after all so I have ordered one on line - £71 hardly cheap but feel it's a small price to pay for continued continence and a decent sex life

August5 · 09/05/2011 20:32

Hi moreandmore, thanks for your message, really encouraging. Went to the gp and she's referred me to the continence clinic, she knew about the treatments I mentioned, hope that I can get back in shape soon.

I do Pilates once a week, this helps a lot with spd and regaining abdominal muscles but hasn't helped with pelvic floor yet.

Sleeplessinderbyshire, what is that stimulator you bought?
