Bleeding after sex

Last time DH & I had sex it was a bit painful and afterwards I had period type pains and about three days of bleeding. I've been on the mini pill since DS2 was born just over 2 years ago and have ony recently had a couple of very erratic periods so when this happened I thought it possible it was a coincidence.

What with the bleeding, me going away for a few days and then forgetting to take my pill, we haven't had sex for three weeks. We did last night and it wasn't uncomfortable but today I have had period pains and some very light bleeding.

Obviously I'll go to the the doctors as soon as I can get an appointment this week but I'm just wondering apart from really scary stuff, what this could be?

Being on the mini pill can make you prone to this - often caused by 'cervical erosion', harmless changes where the cervix is a bit delicate and bleeds easily after getting bashed about during sex.

But a trip to GP is in order just to check, routine would be a smear test and swab to check for infections. If all is clear, you may want to a)put up with it, or b) try a different contraception.

Hi
Just to highlight that investigtions for post coital bleeding does not include a smear test as it's a screening test (for women without any symptoms) so don't be surprised if the GP does an exam and swabs but not a smear test; link to the national screening programme website here

BelaLugosi saw GP this morning wjo suggested doing a smear test as my lasy one was summer 2009 while they are doing a swab .Does that sound reasonable?

The advice from the lab I work in sample takers (if they ring and ask) in circumstances such as yours is not to take a cervical screening test so long as:

  1. you are more than 6 months away from your recall date
  2. your last test was negative
If you're under 50 and the last one was negative then you wouldn't usually be due another one until summer 2012. Many labs will now not process cervical screening tests taken outside the screening programme, though I don't know what the lab in your area is doing.

The usual investigations can include taking swabs, visual physical examination, possibly changing the type of hormones (different types can produce a larger area on the cervix which is more likely to bleed), and/or referral to gynaecology and/or colposcopy.
It sounds like the GP is going with the above as they've suggested swabs.
