Following the birth of my Son almost two years ago, by C-Section, (he was 10lbs 4oz) my stomach is now very strange. Around the Navel area and above it looks almost pointed and feels very hard when I'm standing upright. I have Fibroids and thought this was the cause, but after Scans I've been told the Fibroids have actually shrunk during pregnancy.

I've been to my G.P and she doesn't seem to be taking me seriously. I explained I can no longer do stomach crunches as my stomach muscles on the left go into spasm, it's very painful and I just have to lie there until the spasm passes. Sometimes it feels like something is trying to push it's way through.

Could this possibly be some kind of Hernia? There is no external protrusion visible, just hardness of the Abdomen and a peak like appearance. I'm due to return to see my G.P in 2 weeks time and dread being fobbed off again. Has anyone else had Abdominal problems post Pregnancy and are there any treatments to rectify things?

Thanks

Sorry no personal experience but maybe you could get an appointment with a different GP?

Sorry to hear about this and your GP. Pregnancy left me with an umbilical hernia, and my GP wasn't very good either. Luckily the midwives referred me to an NHS physio who has been great.

Good luck with the next GP appointment, I second asking for another GP if this one doesn't help, you have a right to do this.

Although I have no idea what you have got, in case it is interesting, treatment for an umbilical hernia seems to be: wearing a 'tubigrip' (a supportive stretchy thing to hold it all in) followed by exercises, and if that doesn't work well enough, a tummy tuck operation if you have finished your family (think it has to be dangerously bad to get that on the NHS, so I don't think I will be having that any time soon). I also have been advised to wear that 'Spanx' type underwear with extra support (either pants or vest).

Good luck

I had a section too and on a postnatal visit to the physio she said I had some gap in my stomach muscles (can't remember the technical terms) and gave me some exercises to do. Unfortunately I was the usual busy tired first time mum and soon forgot. About 9 years later I was having surgery (long story!) and my surgeon discoved that I had an umbilical hernia. He said it was quite common in women who had large babies (8lb 13oz) and sections. I didn't know I had it as it caused me no grief, and I didn't notice any pointing (but it isn't flat!!! Wink).

Thanks everyone. I went to my GP and it was a Locum, I wanted to discuss having a blood test for Iron deficiency and also the stomach thing, but he said he was only willing to discuss one problem at a time, so I've had to book another appointment for the stomach in 2 weeks.

I think I also have the gap, where my Rectus Abdominus hasn't closed properly, so will ask if I can be referred to an Obstetric Physio, failing that I may just have to pay for it myself.
