Hi, my DD (4) has chickenpox. Bless her, she looks like she should be carrying a bell and the spots are driving her round the bend. I've been using Aqueous Calamine and giving her antihistamine but has anyone got any other suggestions that may help more please? I feel that the spots are NEVER going to go. Sad

Oats are soothing to the skin, so put some in the bottom of an old pair of tights and tie them up. Put in a bath, the waterwill go all 'milky' and is naturally soothing. I used this advice with both of my DC's when they has chickenpox.

Megatron · 18/04/2011 11:36

Thanks ellenbrody will try that. Smile

Hope she feels better soon. I gave my DD lots of baths with bicarb of soda in it to help clear the spots/scabs up quicker HTH

I'll try anything! The worst spots on her face and I'm really worried that they'll scar.

I'm sure someone told me to put Bicarb of soda in bath water, you might want to google this first though.

Piriton - our GP recommended it when DD had them, & it worked FAR better than anything else - hope she feels better soon :)

If you want a slightly less messy version of the oats bath, get some aveeno bath oil as it contains oatmeal. Oats are a great natural anti-inflammatory. How is your DD compared to normal? Children with chickenpox should be carrying on as normal. If they are taking to their bed and very sleepy then get in contact with your GP.

My 2 ds's have just had CP. Ds2 is 2 yrs and didn't cope too well being covered in calamine lotion, so I used Virasoothe. It is a gel and is easier to apply and less stinky.
I also used bicarb in the bath.
Hope she's coping ok

I used Eurax cream for my DS when he had chickenpox, after doing a bit of research. It definitely helped soothe the itching and he hasn't been left with any scars.

littlemisslozza · 18/04/2011 22:32

Another recommendation for Virasoothe here, really good cooling gel that helped my two.

Megatron · 21/04/2011 08:31

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions, all her spots have scabbed over now. I just wanted to ask if everyone carried on with using Virasoothe or Aqueous after spots scabbed over too? Or should I use some other child's moisture cream to help heal her skin and prevent scarring? Thanks in advance!

Megatron, my 3 all had the pox badly about 2 years ago and a bit of sunshine really helped with healing. IME the scarring was a bit random. DD2 had over 300 spots on her face (a VERY bad dose) but only has one scar there right in her hairline.

Hope your DD feels better soon. The scabbing usually signifies that you are over the worst I think.,

Megatron · 21/04/2011 08:56

She's fine in herself now thanks and I'll let her play in the garden again today as I don't think it'll be too hot for her, I just wasn't sure if I should stop covering her in cream now they're scabbed over or if it helped keep her skin more comfortable. Your poor wee daughter sounds like she had a terrible dose Sad. Just waiting for my son to get it now!

From what I can remember of when I had CP, I continued to be itchy throughout, so I continued to apply virasooth until the scabs started to fall off.
Glad she's doing well, and agree that a bit of sun will help out too.

Megatron · 21/04/2011 10:14

Great, thanks all. Grin

thanks for this, DD has come out in spots today too Sad

i think it's snuck up on us as she's been taking anti-histamines for prickly heat [forehead slap]

pinkstarlight · 21/04/2011 17:42

with my kids i just used anti histamines camomile lotion and a pinch of bicarbinate soda in the bath. not much more you can do but let nature take its course.
