my mouth is full of very painful ulcers

And the rest of the family have some ulcers too - though nobody has got them as bad as me Sad i have about nine small and horribly painful ones on the end of my tongue, a huge one underneath it; and one or two on the inside of my lower lip.
i went to the doctor about them last week and she didn't even look at them and just said it was probably because i was run down and exhausted with a small baby. she prescribed something that has been hopeless, and the ulcers subsequently got a lot worse.
eating is very painful and there's no question of drinking anything hot. initially i agreed that it was probably because i am run down and stressed; but given the rest of the family has them, it must be something infectious. what on earth could it be?

Do you have a baby? Are there any on your hands and feet? Sounds like it might be hand, foot and mouth. I had it once and my hands and feet weren't too bad, but my mouth was horribly painful and full of ulcers.

ps when my DS 3.5yrs got them i posted on here and some people suggested hand foot and mouth disease, but he had no other symptoms of that, and neither do we (touch wood.) so i'm unconvinced, unless you can get hand foot and mouth with only mouth ulcers as the symptom...

sorry, bythesea - crossed post. nothing on any of our hands or feet. very odd. how long did your painful mouth last? mine began a week ago and has got steadily worse. last night was the worst - i was in bed by 8pm i was in so much pain. today it's a bit better but still horrible.

If it's hand foot and mouth, it's probably on its way out by now. I can't remember exactly how long mine lasted, but probably a week at the longest. One of the worst weeks of my life as I remember -- my dad died that week and we had to go overseas for his funeral and then were trapped there by a hurricane. My painful mouth made it just so much worse too.

poor you, that sounds awful!
i'm just loading on some stuff called iglu which helps a tiny bit and hoping each day that there will be less of the blighters, not more!

I sure hope it gets better and better for you -- it is a miserable feeling. If I recall correctly (it was 11 1/2 years ago), once it went, it went and didn't linger.

I have had a mouthful and throatful of ulcers for the last four days. I started with flu symptoms and v tired and ended up like this. My mum has had the same but ( touch wood) my children haven't caught it. You have my sympathy - it's agony. I have been so hungry but it hurts to eat! I have been surviving on ice pops, difflam spray and painkillers. Hope you feel better soon.

Warm salt water mouthwash, three times a day. Half an hour later, dispersible aspirin or cocodamol, run it round your mouth for as long as you can before swallowing.

My little bro, me and mum used to suffer terribly with mouth ulcers so it wouldn't be unusual for us all to have them at a similar time. But you could consider that you've all eaten something that has set you off. With me it used to be tomatoes, now it's prawn cocktail crisps!

Horribly painful and so miserable, but the salt water and painkillers do help heal and numb the pain. Same works for tonsillitis - check your tonsils and your kids too, I often get ulcers in my mouth and on my tonsils if I'm having an attack.

My DS had something like this last week which lasted about 8 days. He had already had HFM so I assumed it wasn't that, but I've just read you can catch it more than once so it's more than likely a recurrence of it. He only had a couple of blisters on one finger the first time, and last week it was only his mouth that was affected, so it's possible that it is HFM.

corsodly mouthwash might give you all a bit of relief while it takes its course.

Northernlurker · 18/04/2011 00:00

Have you tried anbesol on them? Stings like crazy but then blissful relief!

CrossWhy · 18/04/2011 21:00

Get orabase paste, forms a protective layer over the ulcer so helps them heal, needs to be applied a few times a day, maybe more but you get a massive tube for £5.00

My sister's boyfriend has mouth ulcers almost constantly, he avoids sodium lauryl sulphate (foaming agent) in toothpaste (sensodine has none) . I bought him a powder called Xylotene (sp?) you can get it in selected pharmacies or from www.sweetcuresofyork.com, he puts it directly on his ulcers but you can dissolve it in liquid and drink, it promotes healthy gums, he finds it a great help. Also some people say eating an apple or two a day help. I looked on the internet ages ago for a cure for him and found a website an ulcer-sufferer had set up where he went through every medicine/lotion/gel etc he tried and rated their effectiveness, can't remember the name of the site tho...
Best of luck, I've never had them but they sound like a nightmare x

Could be related to current very high pollen levels. Take an antihistimine--piriton is good but makes you drowsy. Corsydyl mouthwash is helpful, dilute it by half otherwise it stings. You can brush your teeth with it too, dip your toothbrush in. Toms of Maine and Wileda do fennel flavoured toothpastes that don't sting as well. Difflam is a mouthwash that numbs everything, you have to ask the chemist for it, it comes in a spray or mouthwash and is very fabulous.

Is there a chance that it's thrush? If your GP keeps fobbing you off try going to the dentist.

Have you been in contact with anyone with a cold sore recently? My DD gets gingivostomatitis, which is caused by contact with the herpes simplex virus. It generally occurs in young children but adults can contract it
