Had an op under local anesthetic on Wednesday, being feeling sick, dizzy and not quite right since last night.

I had carpal tunnel decompression surgery on Wednesday, initially felt ok, sore but manageable, since last night I have felt sick, dizzy etc, not sure if it is related or something else.

Can this be a result of the anesthetic? My mum seems to think it is because I haven't rested at all, and if I rest I will be fine. I didn't really think I had to rest as it was only a local anesthetic and day surgery.

Just wondering if anyone had experienced this after surgery?

I ahve had 3/4 minor ops done under local anesthetics over the past 2 years and have felt truly awful afterwards, really sick dizzy lightheaded etc

Thanks Saltire, did you feel ill right away or a few days later?

About 12-24 hours later and for at least 24-48 hours afterwards. The first time it happended I didn't know associate it with the local, it was only after the 2nd time that I realsied

Sorry, my mum popped up. Interesting that you have felt the same. I spoke to someone at NHS 24 who said that it would be totally unrelated to the anesthetic as it is too long afterwards, but I'm not really convinced especially as you have had similar.

She said it is either viral or the beginnings of a post op infection, and to rest up and monitor swelling/pain/redness.

So i'll just see how it goes, thanks again.

I would have said potential post-op infection as well, rather than anaesthetic now - have you checked your temperature? You need to monitor that as well.

Hope you are ok.

Aimsmum · 16/04/2011 16:52

I have just checked my temp using an ear thermometer, it is varying between 37.5 and 38 but I don't think I have it in the proper position as I can only use one hand (other is in a sling) so I think it is probably ok, but I will keep an eye on that too.

What is actually considered a high temp in adults? Anything over 38?

Have they given you painkillers? Could be a side effect of them if you are using them.

Aimsmum · 17/04/2011 12:47

I've only had painkillers that I've had before, so don't really think it was that. I rested up yesterday and had a lie in this morning and I do feel a lot better.

Also all the bruising has started to come out on my wrist and the swelling has gone done a little so hopefully, it will start easing up too. Thanks everyone for the advice Smile
