I'm having my first period since having the contraceptive implant fitted 5 weeks ago. I have been bleeding for 7 days now. Just had a shower and passed a big 'thing'. It's not like a bloody clot, but like a big sack of skin with a hole in it. There doesn' seem to be anything in the sack. It's a pinky brown colour and I haven't got a clue what the hell it is. I know I wasn't pregnant when I had the implant fitted, and I tested again the week after the implant (negative).

Do I need to see a doctor?
What could it be?

Hi, sorry - i've only just spotted your replies.

Needcoffee - I'd say it was big enough to fit a small chicken's egg in. Bleurrghh.

peachy - thank you, I'm fine Smile
The cramping has stopped now so I'm not feeling as worried as I was. i think I will pop to the doctors tomorrow though.

Hi, Glad you are ok and I really hope the Dr has helped. Something big enough to fit a chicken leg in sounds pretty odd.

Hiya.
I couldn't get an appointment until the end of the week but now the bleeding and cramping has stopped I'm not too concerned. I looked it up online and it seems to happen when people change contraception and the womb lining is shed in one piece. It was pretty gross looking but I think it was probably harmless. If I get any other odd symptoms I will go to the GP ASAP.

Thank you so much for your replies. It frightened the life out of me when it happened so I was glad of a bit of support. Thanks.

I had never heard anything like it so I'm pleased it could be something simple (no less bloody scary if it happens to you though!) Think your drs need a word though! End of the week after passing an unknown thing following a coil insertion! Not on, imo!

WhatOnEarthIsIt · 20/04/2011 19:40

Hi Peachy,
it was my fault re the doctors as I didn't want to explain what happened to the receptionist on the phone. I didn't have a coil, I had the implant which goes in your arm (used to be called implanon, now it's called Nexoplanon or something like that). I probably would be more concerned if it had been the coil I'd had because I'd be worrying that the coil had pulled something out! Shock.

If I get any other dodgy stuff going on I will be straight to the GP Smile
