dd1 had hers at 18 months, after a long discussion with my then HV, who was very very nice and let me decide things for me and dd

but ive moved area now and have a new HV who i dont like - she sent a letter last week telling me to call the surgery and make an appt for dd2's MMR this week (dd2 is 12 months)

i obviously didnt do it as i want dd2 to have her MMR at 18 months also

she went nuts and told me i was putting dd2 at risk of measles etc etc etc

told me the 'protocol' is 12-13 months

As I understand it, the practice gets paid for each child given the MMR - so they do have a financial incentive. But it's probably more that's she's worried about the public health implications of unvaccinated children. Can you reassure her that you'll turn up at 18 months? She may be worried that you will not do it at all.

bakabat · 02/11/2005 11:40

Haven't done it (ds2 is 3 and a half). Never had any problems from my surgery. Just a jokey/sarcstic comment from my Doctor (he got one back) and a couple of comments recently from my HV about giving ds2 the baby jabs "now he;s older" (but not giving the baby the baby jabs other than "there's no point asking you is there").

Why is it between 12 and 18 months? DS hasn't had his yet and is 19mo on Thursday. I was going to get him an appointment for next Monday (the only day I have off work in the week.

dd was 14 months.

Gomez · 02/11/2005 11:47

DD2 is 17 months and I am planning to wait until she is nearer 2. No adverse comments from HV at all.

np, FWIW I do think it is worth having a discussion with her or your gp about it, in case there is a particular concern about measles in the area or whatever. it can't hurt to show them some professional respect (nws bad experiences with hv's generally...), then make your own mind up and do what you think is best for your child.

madmarchflare · 02/11/2005 11:58

13 months.

dd had it at 13months, no problems and she's nearly due the booster. ds will have it too once he's old enough. i don't have any worries about it at all.

Davros · 02/11/2005 16:39

DD had measles single at 18 months and just had rubella at 2.5 years. I would be very cross with an HV speaking to me like that, whatever I chose to do.... and she's wrong ha ha!

Do what you're happy with Kama, 12 months is fine according to the Red Book but the earliest to do it. Don't worry about putting it off if you feel like it or just getting it over with.

3 yrs 2 months. I procrastinated for ages over it, she was ill when her original appointment came up.
It was awful though because she knew what was coming and screamed the place down.

singersgirl · 02/11/2005 17:20

DS1 16 months in hospital because of suspected egg allergy; DS2 at 28 months because he had 5 courses of oral steroids for asthma between 1 and 2 and our GP wouldn't give MMR too close to an oral steroid course (6 weeks, if I remember correctly).

ruty · 02/11/2005 17:44

nailpolish you can tell your hv to go and speak to an immnologist. My ds's consultant immunologist [very pro jabs] told me MMR not as effective at 12 months, best to leave it between 15 and 18 months for it to be most effective. So she obviously doesn't know this. Something to do with mother's antibodies interfering with the vaccine before this.

bobbybob · 02/11/2005 17:56

It is given at 15 months in NZ. That fits in nicely with the last DTap type injection though - so I bet it's more for that reason than anything else.

Having said that ds is 2.75 and still not done. I will probably let him have his pre school "booster" at 4.
