ji, i posted on her over a week ago regarding my dd age 13 months as she has had the runs for 12 days now.

i did take her to our gp and he told me to wait another week!!!!!!

was not happy so took her to another gp and he told me to let it pass and see my health visitor, at this time my dd had the most terrible nappy rash due to all the messy nappies, i asked what he could give me and he told me that there was nothing he could do, advised me to use cream and change nappies more often.....like i wasnt doing that already!!!!

its now day 12 and no change, she is lethargic and very clingy, got an appointment with hv but really will lose it if she doesnt help me more..

am i being unreasonable here???

help...

You can buy dioralyte from the chemist over the counter. When my kids were poorly (eg DD with chicken pox at 5 months) I spoonfed them water or v. dilute juice.

just come back and to be honest the hv was excellant.

she thinks its to do with good and bad bacteria and my dd is fighting against the bad which is giving her the runs....she has lost alot of weight but hv wants to give it another week, she did say something about toddler diorhia [sp] and it could be that, but not to worry as dd seems ok and is not dehydrated...she checked.

as for nappy rash she has given me something else which is brilliant in her opinion and gave me some tips on how to treat and cope with nappy rash.

must say out of all the hv i have seen she was amazing.

hey and thanks to you guys too.

don't know what the earliest age they can have them, but when my ds who was 3 at the time had diar. for a long time for no apparant reason, someone recommended him having a bottle of the good bacteria type yoghurty drinks a day. It cleared him up really quickly, i think it just gave him some more good bacteria in his tummy, to get rid of the nasty bad ones.

princesspeahead · 02/11/2005 12:44

WHY won't they just take a sample and culture it? Again, I would go to your GPs reception, ask for a poo pot, take a sample, and insist that they send it to the lab.
If it comes back clear then you have learnt something and can be relatively relaxed about seeing if it can run its course/give her probiotics etc. If it comes back NOT clear then (a) she should be given antibiotics to treat whatever she has and (b) your GP should be given a rocket for not sending off a stool sample a week ago.

Sloppy lazy medicine IMO.

lucykatie · 02/11/2005 12:54

yeah i do agree with you about poo sample, did ask but she says that because she is fit and well otherwise, they will let it run its course....did argue the point but she sadi to try with adult yoghurts, not actmel or anything similar as to much good bacteria....normal yoghurts have enough good bacteria for little ones.

said to hv that i would return in 1 week if no change and if worse i will be down again with a sample....she said she was sure it will be clear within 2-3 days if given adult yoghurts etc.

I had a runny tummy for 2 weeks and felt fine otherwise -= when they cultured it they found campylobacter and I had to go on anti bs. Feeling fine in herself doesn't nec. mean anything. And it is so easy to take a sample and check it. I'd be insisting on it if it was my child.

Try boiling up some pearl barley till it is really soft & keep the liquid until cool (discard barley) offer this to you DD as it has alot of nutrients in & will help nuetralize her system so her wee & poo isn't as acidic, in turn helping her nappy rash. You could also try offering her the water that you boil your veg in as this is full of good stuff too. Sounds disgusting, but my dd loves it & it seems to work wonders for her!

Is she teething at the moment? This often causing gastro problems as the immune system becomes slighty weaker, hence nappy rash, messy nappies, clingy ness.

Hope she is getting over the worst of it tho.

lucykatie, skim-read your posts, am pleased to hear your hv was more sympathetic.

I would just like to add a note of caution - to keep an eye out. My dd, when she was just 3, had diarrhoea for over a week. She was eating and drinking fine, and her normal happy self, so I didn't think much of it tbh. Then after 5 days I noticed that there was some blood in her poo - to cut a long story short she ended up in isolation in hospital - still her happy normal self! They never did find out what caused it in the end though they suspected a severe bacterial infection.

I'm really NOT trying to worry you, but just keep an eye out for any blood, as your GP should take that seriously, regardless of other symptoms. My dd was (and is) never miserable, even if she is poorly, so I don't use that as an indication of how ill she is.

sickandtired · 02/11/2005 15:57

I had this with my ds's, my younger ds1 had such bad nappy rash that even now, (this was in march!) he still has scars on his bottom. It made them terrified to go to toilet even after it had cleared. After taking and listening to a load of shite from the docs I took them to a & e - it turned out they had comparlabacta (sp) - nice it took over a month to find that out, it could have killed them!

Listen to your gut, if I was you I'd go to a & e, if her bottom has open weaping sores, she could get an infection.

Good luck

sickandtired · 02/11/2005 15:57

they also had blood in their poo like mioau

Miaou · 02/11/2005 16:05

yes s&t, campylobactyr (also unsure of spelling!) was mentioned to me too

lucykatie · 02/11/2005 16:34

thanks guys, will def keep an eye out for poo etc.

got her some new nappy cream so hopefully that will work.

will try the barley water thing, eben though it sounds yuck.

hope its nothing as been in and out of hospital with dd1 and its soooo stressfull.

will keep you posted
