Is there a doctor in the house?

This morning as I was coming into the house a fly flew into my mouth. I coughed and spluttered naturally and spat it out, but the whole thing had caused me to start retching, which led to vomiting.
Whilst I was (almost dry) vomiting I experienced a feeling like something 'snapping' in my head and was suddenly crippled with unspeakable head pain. It was so acute that I was wailing in pain. I managed to run a flannel under the cold tap and made it to the living room where I sat for some time on the couch, bolt upright with the flannel on my head. During this time my pulse was racing and the pain in my head was throbbing in time to my pulse.

I have had migraines most of my life but this was a far worse pain than I have ever had before - if someone had offered to shoot me I'd have accepted.

Eventually my pulse returned to normal and the pain receded slightly and began to feel more like a 'normal' migraine. - in this case, similar to the sensation of wearing a Norman Helmet that someone was shrinking! I went back to bed in a pitch black room, where I propped myself bolt upright for most of the day. By about 3pm I was functioning again (a couple of ibuprofen along the way and a pint of water) and now I have just a shadow headache.

Perhaps I should have called the doctor at the time but I could barely function as stated, and now I feel as though I'd be wasting their time.

Does anyone have any ideas what happened? Could it perhaps be a burst blood vessel or similar? And should I be worried now, even though I feel almost normal again?

Glad you feel so much better - but you should still go and get checked over, let someone examine you, take your pulse and BP, make sure you haven't got a temp or neck stiffness.

You don't mention feeling faint or passing out which is good. Migraine is probably the most likely explanation. Still worth getting checked.

Thanks all. I wasn't able to go to A&E last night due to childcare issues, and woke up this morning with a headache again. I think I'll be popping up there this morning.

Yes, agree. Go to a+e. Severe thunderclap type headache (worst ever), sudden onset, plus photophobia and neck stiffness. Best to get checked out. I would want a small bleed to be ruled out. Potentially, although extremely unlikely subarachnoid haemorrhage.
