I would appreciate any tips as finding what I need on the internet isnt happening!!!
Basically I had a very horrific birth with my first child. Have now been told I have a prolapse, and I'm only 23. Quite depressing really.
Gynae says I have two options - removal of my cervix (cannot find anything about this, only hysterectomy) or the dreaded merina coil. Having never got on with hormones and hearing horror stories of said coil im not liking that option. Has anyone had these suggestions? And what has happened? or is there something else I can do (kegels done and not helped) Thanks

I didn't get on that well with the mirena coil but I am glad I tried it, removal was quick and easy and pain free so I would opt for that whilst you research the other options and see if it helps. Not sure why the mirena will help though?

removal of the cervix? That sounds a bit over-the top to me,surely it would rule out another pregnancy? My friend had a pretty bad prolapse after her first child and it was suggested that she didn't have any sort of a repair until she'd had another baby. Can you see another gynae? Or muster up the cash to see one privately? I am shocked that given your age and the fact you only have one baby removal of the cervix is being suggested.

Did the gynae say how a mirena would help?

get a second opinion and check out embarrassing bodies website if you have a strong stomach !

Thanks for your replies.
Yes im a little shocked myself, I did know deep down that I had some form of prolapse (have seen male gynae before - never again was a disaster).
Was referred to lady gynae with good reputation because of pain and for cervical smear.
Instead im bieng told I need a hysteroscopy and laparoscopy (think these are correct spellings!)
She says that every month the extra wieght from menstrual cycle causes cervix to stretch and drop more - causing more pain. So theoretically Merina coil should stop the heavy lining and stop the pain.
She did say removal of the cervix will prevent further children (although thats pretty obvious) and she would prefere the coil, but from what I can gather that is not actually helping the prolapse?
Am pretty upset TBH

brokenmarrow I think I know the bit you are talking about - have seen prolapse stuff on embarrasing bodies before. Problem is this is my second opinion!!
Has anyone had this, and been offered another treatment?
Am feeling like will never be normal again, obviously after a baby things change I expected that, but at 23 with ONE baby who wasnt even a big baby I feel like ive got a rough deal :(

You have had a rough deal. I would recommend having the mirena now as it will help. I had horrendously heavy periods and went to spotting with the mirena and the amount of hormones used is far less than in the pill.

Suregery is advancing all the time - in the future there may be a better option out there. Def worth trying to find out a nationwide leading specialist and trying to see them - privately if necessary.

Thanks cargirl.

Think I will try it, will have a chat with the gynae and explain my concerns, and say if I dont get on with it I want it out! Have heard of ladies having to fight with their GP to get it removed.

Think the surgery is too much to risk at the moment.

I did have to be very insistant to get mine removed - I'd had it for 2 years, I thought it was causing my spots and tearfulness - turned out it wasn't though Blush.

However the threads had been irritating me and causing me itching discomfort - which I realised as they stopped when I had it removed!

Flyonthewindscreen · 10/04/2011 21:52

Just to say I am on my second mirena (after having the first replaced after 5 years) and have had no side effects, no periods for nearly six years now Smile so would recommend anyone giving it a go, especially as the alternative for you is so drastic.

nulliusxinxverbax · 11/04/2011 00:22

Yes I suppose it might be the case that people tend to speak up about something if its bad, but not if its good!! So the things ive heard might not be the majority of cases.

My worry is side effects such as wieght gain and anxiety / depression. With my pregnancy I went from a size 8 to an 18 in the last 3 months, still not sure why. Had to resort to starvation to kick start the weight loss!
Plus im not exactly sure if the coil does anything for the condition, just treats the pain. If thats the case then I wonder if its worth the risk to my mental health!!!

Will have a chat with gynae I think. They threw so much info at me and forms about these surgeries my mind went a little blank. I was just hoping there might be a third option somewhere.
