I will make a huge assumption here, and assume that your GP means that in terms of reducing your cardiovascular risk it's better to start you on the statins, given your age (not that you are an old duffer).
To explain, pre menopausal women have a lower rate of coronary heart disease than men, due to the protective effects of the oestrogens and progesterones that we secrete. However once women go through the menopause that protective effect is lost, so within about 10 years, womens rates of heart disease rise to meet mens.
Starting you on a statin is a good thing. They not only lower your cholesterol level, but alos can help to reduce inflammation in the lining of the arteries, reducing the chances of plaque build up (which is what causes angina and heart attack).
By all means make the dietary changes. At least 5 portions of fruit and veg, pulses, oats and cutting back on saturated fat will help reduce cholesterol as well. There is a body of thought that the extra vitamins from fruit and veg can have a protective effect, as well as the extra fibre helping to reduce the incidence of some cancers as well.
