Ok, not a charming thread - but please come tell me why my armpits are so pongy?!

Name changed since I am Blush My issue is, I shower daily in the morning, use a good deodrant/anti-perspirant, put on clean clothes, but by the time I have sorted everything/everyone out for school and got back from the school run I am already smelling a bit sweaty. I change my t shirt at this point, another clean one. By mid afternoon, sometimes earlier, I feel smelly again. My armpits are usually wet, as is my t shirt. Bizarrely, my right armpit is by far the worst!! And I know I am sweatier and smellier when stressed. Stress sweat is yuck.

Am I the only smelly one, or is it just that I lead a busy life? [hopeful emoticon] And realistically, what can I do?

I'm the same Blush and am sure I never had this problem until a year or so ago. Have started wearing less/lighter clothes than I used to to try to stop the sweating starting. This works to some degree but will watch for replies with interest!

Could it be peri-menopause related - this is a common symptom?

MadMommaMemoo · 07/04/2011 20:57

I had this for years. The chemist sell some deoderants that you put on at night. You have to ask for them though as they are usually behind the counter. They work really well.

chocolatespiders · 07/04/2011 20:57

have you tried Mitchum roll on deodrant?

I started using it 4 years ago after feeling smelly and i ahve never bought anything else.. You could buy a small one in wilkinsons to try it

MadMommaMemoo · 07/04/2011 20:58

this works really well

MadMommaMemoo · 07/04/2011 20:59

this is the one I use now and I only have to use it a couple of times a week

SpawnChorus · 07/04/2011 20:59

Oh oh! I've just posted about this! What a coincidence! I've stopped using anti-perspirant, as I found the chemicals off-putting, and I use Pit-rok (rock crystal deodorant). My pits don't pong, but ugh...they are soooo soggy.

SpawnChorus · 07/04/2011 21:00

FWIW Mitchum antiperspirant was the dogs bollocks for eliminating all sweatiness.

kuckingfunt · 07/04/2011 21:26

MadMomma - those ones that you linked to really sting my armpits, I have tried them in the past and I felt as though my pits were on fire.

I use the Sure 24hour protection now - its in a box and is about £5. It's really good and can last me up to 2 days. Mitchum stopped working for me after a while.

LeChatRouge · 07/04/2011 21:30

One thing I have realised recently is to switch brands regularly - I seem to 'adjust' to one type and it becomes ineffective. My preferred is an unscented stick type, quite hard to find. Obviously keeping completely hair free really helps too....I am using a Mens Sure stick at the mo....no issues so far.

nightcat · 07/04/2011 22:03

do you eat much dairy? coz I noticed when I decreased dairy I barely sweat or smell anymore, only if I occasionally have dairy I recognise the same old smell

Jamiesmagictorch · 07/04/2011 22:08

I used the Mitchum and liked it but it did irritate after a while so now I use Vaseline cream antiperspirant and then Sure 24 spray on top. Double protection and no irritation so far. Worth a try.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 08/04/2011 10:45

it may be worth asking your GP if you have hyperhydrosis. I know that you can have a sympathectomy for that, but I believe that excess perspiration can be treated with botox.

PitsofPeril · 08/04/2011 11:20

Thanks for the replies, all very interesting. I tried Mitchum 24 hours to no avail, as well as the swapping brands trick (works for a few days max!) I have even had no luck with the chemist ones Blush And yes, I possibly am peri-menopausal but tbh the issue pre-dates that (tho maybe it has worsened.) But thanks for all the suggestions.

The dairy link is intriguing, I eat a fair amount. Worth reducing it, see if it helps!

One of the other issues is that my clothing gets stinky and t shirts eventually seem to pick up the odour permanently, despite proper washing powders etc. I have to buy new ones regulalry. It can be an expensive problem.

I found that antiperspirant just does not work for me. DH convinced me to try some of the rock crystal deodorant and although I still sweat the same amount, I'm not as stinky.

As for the smelly t shirts, I picked up a great tip on MN: before washing spray white vinegar onto the offending areas and wash at 60 degrees. OK, the t shirts will start to fade quicker than if they were washed at a lower temp, but they last longer than when I was throwing them away because they stank.
