Advice & support needed for myself: Macular Degeneration

Just had an eyetest done today, after double checking my right eye its been suggested that I have "debris" similar to 2 dots at the back of my eye.

I was given a medical term but can't recall what it was, further test was done that involved various squares and if I could view them straight etc.

I have been referred to my gp for later this week and then onto my local eye hospital.

I have got home and googled and think the medical term for what its suggested I have is:Macular Degeneration

I know no more..................... My eye sight has improved which I guess is a good sign but im slightly concerned with what may be wrong.

I have no other signs of Macular Degeneration, apart from what was seen today..

anyone any advice, I have read stuff which tbh worries me slightly esp the fact its degenerative....

TIA X

Hi, my mum had this, have you googled the macular degeneration society? My mum subscribes, they are useful, and I would recommend giving them a ring, they are v good with practical advice and dealing with people who can be quite upset or shocked at being diagnosed,

Is it the wet or dry? If i remember correct, is the wet rather more severe but surgery can help with it, whereas dry isn't, but surgery can't do anything but medication can stop it from getting worse?

Ask your doctor to refer you to a low vision clinic.

the macular degeneration test is something to do with a grid and if / where you can see a spot, also in bright light your vision will be blurred, so if you drive would look further into this, rather than your daily vision getting worse and needing glasses, you may fing come summer you prefer glasses that shield light from your eyes and round the sides of your eyes, ifykwim?

First off, stop Googling. Wait until you have a firm diagnosis. MD is scary, but debris or floaters are normal.

I have been in a similar situation to you - floaters, the grid test, referral onwards - and am fine. No MD. All eye conditions are more easily treated and have better prognosis if identified early, so it is great that your optician is bring cautious.

Now you have to relax, chill, and wait.

Wait and see what the specialists say before you google, as PC says there are other causes for 'debris'.
I have annual eye tests for both glaucoma and MD; mother has had both, and for the latter had surgery with a good outcome (lives in the US, they seem to be much more pro-active in treating a number of age-related conditions, although private insurance covers the majority of costs)

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Yes, I know I should not google and tbh I haven't looked into it since. I have called my gp to make them aware that a referral will be on route. They have said they will call me once its received.

I am looking at going private for the referral, would rather been seen asap than wait (even if days) on the NHS.

btw, i went choosing glasses yesterday. Looked at various opticians... one commented that maybe I await the result of the hospital referral before I go any further..? optician never told me this.. any suggestions.? I mean imo regadless of the outcome my eye sight is still as it is atm and I still need glasses....

Hi all, just to update.. relief of the greatest quantity Smile..

I have seen a consultant this morning, he says my eyes are fine and nothing to be concerned about.
He has seen what the optician saw at my examination but he says given his experience what he can see is light reflecting form the light they use to look.Smile.

He wushes to take pictures though for records to refer to at a later date if needed and to use to teach further... he says they are a fabtastic example of confussion to an optician iykiwm.

Famous eyeballs eh!

Had to laugh though, he put drops into my eyes and asked me to wait in the waiting room for a few mins for my pupils to dilate.. upon walking back into his room I literally walked into A QUESTION OF SPORTS bill beaumont Grin. You know where you walk one way and they follow etc.. he asked if I was dancing to which I nearly replied "no its just that I cant see feck all" Grin.

Just relieved that I have been seen and all is fine. Just now awaiting my vision returning...Hmm

Note to self: DON'T GOOGLE
