Ruptured ovarian cyst

Hi, I have had grumbling pains for a few weeks which ended up getting much worse suddenly, and then after 5 days becoming excruciating

I ended up in the gynae ward where I had a scan and they told me I had two ovarian cysts, one of 3cm, one of 6cm. There was also free fluid and they felt the bad pain had been caused by the 3cm cyst rupturing, the free fluid was causing the remaining pain.

I just wanted to hear anyone elses experiences of this, in particular how long afterwards the pain lasted. I am still needing strong painkillers now a week later and I am worried about the remaining 6cm cyst. I also feel very bloated and I look 5 months pregnant (I am quite slim normally).

Thanks

Hi bloated (encouraging Smile)
I had the exact same thing as you last July (my cyst ruptured at my sister's wedding where I was a bridesmaid!!). I had free fluid etc detected on a scan too.

The pain lasted around 2 weeks for me, the first week really painful and the second week dull pain.

Have they given you any management plan or next steps for the remaining cyst? I hope you are taking things easy and looking after yourself x

Hi taking, thanks for replying. I know, the name's an attractive one isn't it? Quick name change and all I could think of.

Thanks for that, useful to know it may be another week. Did you feel bloated?

They are planning to see if it settles down and if it does then to scan again in two months, if it doesn't they will rethink it. No plan to remove the 6cm one as it stands, apparently it's a borderline size, so they want to wait and see if it will diminish of it's own accord. If I carry on getting pain then they will remove it I guess. I had a Mirena which is out now, and I have heard cysts can be a side effect?

What happened with you after care wise, did you have follow up or any other cysts?

No no I was sending you an encouraging smile...not commenting on your name!

As far as I remember I wasn't too bloated. I had a couple of follow-up scans and on one there was a 3cm cyst and I was told that was borderline (so 6cm sounds quite big to be classed as borderline). But they said the same thing to me, wait and see and we will monitor it. I was a bit worried about that...but sometimes they just shrink back down again and never rupture. And they try and leave your ovaries alone if at all poss.

The pain settled down for me but then in January I started having pains again... scans were all clear and so last Monday I went in for a laparoscopy and it turns out I have endometriosis which they treated.

It has taken me 3 different gynae's and countless GP appointments where I was told that nothing was wrong though. I hope your bloating and discomfort settles down really soon, if it doesn't and if you feel worse then please go and hassle your GP/gynae until they sort you out.

Oh! Blush It is a terrible name though....

I have wondered about the size, it seems huge to me! I also worry that knowing it is there will mean I think I feel it iyswim, especially as we are pondering ttc (already have dc). I feel like I need to keep bothering people in order to be listened to as well, glad you got it sorted in the end although Sad for you that it is endometriosis.

Sorry have not had the problem of a ruptured cyst (did experience pain from my one twisting though accompanied by bleeding)

Had surgery on tuesday last week to have it removed. I was getting constant pains with it- sometimes agonising doubled over ones, other times period like pains. I also felt bloated with it and it was pressing down on my bladder etc.

The scan showed it being 7cm long, 5cm wide and 3cm thick. They said it was covering my left ovary.

After coming around from the operation I was told it was central (covering part of both ovaries), a lot bigger than the anticipated and had started to twist and leak (which explains why the pains were getting worse)

They had to cut me in a differnet place to get it out but was lucky that it was still managed to be done by key hole.

I did have mine for over a year as they found it when i was 30 weeks pregnant.

Sorry not much help

thanks Jester, that's interesting as it really worries me that it could keep flaring up or lead to other problems as you describe, especially as I have had grumbling pains for a while now and with the possibility of pregnancy in the nearish future.

I think I will go back to my GP next week as I still feel really bloated and nauseaus.

Hope you are recovering well?
