Clexane- anyone had to have these daily jabs?

Following an op I've got to have daily clexane injections in my tummy for 28 days. DH has to do them :( The instructions are to do them on alternate sides in an area with no bruising.

Anyone know why it is that the jab doesn't hurt too much on the left side of my tummy but is really painful on the right?

might be the way you do it on that side. I found it easier to do it in the top of my leg tbh.
Its a horrible sting :(

28 days?? Poor you! I've just had to do them in my tummy for 9 days after a section and there were no bruise free areas left to use!

I don't think there's any anatomical reason why one side of your abdomen would be sorer than the other. Have you ever had abdo surgery, could the sensation on that side generally be lessened? Otherwise I'd guess it's just something technique related.

Hope the 28 days goes quickly for you!

I did them twice a day for three months during both pregnancies - no idea why more painful on one side than the other, but I did find there were areas of my tummy that were more sensitive than others. As a result, I tended to use the same areas too often - with some spectacular bruising as a result. I preferred tummy to thigh (more fat/flab!) but am sure thats an individual thing.
Do'nt go too near your belly button, lots of nerves around there - at least two inches out. Also, look out for tight trousers, belts or seat belts - all capable of giving spectacular bruises if tight over the injection site of the day!

If it hurts less on one side, just do it on that side! When they say 'in your tummy', I understand it's fine to move right around your trunk to the sides so you 've got plenty of room to play with.

DH often has to jab Clexane. His lightbulb moment was discovering you can split it in two, and jab half in one spot and the other half a few inches away. Doctors had no problem with this, makes no difference to them as long as it's all done at the same time.

Massively reduced the bruising.

I had to inject clexane from 7 weeks pregnant to 6 weeks after delivery. If I was you I would do the injections yourself and push the plunger in really slowly. Most importantly don't rub the area after the injection because it makes the bruises horrific.

Have done clexane daily throughout 2nd pregnancy. It shouldn't hurt more on one side than the other but I found that if it started to hurt when trying to get the needle in, I'd try another site. This sometimes took me 2 or 3 goes. However, when I got the right spot, it doesn't hurt at all while inserting the needle or injecting.

I did 6 weeks post section. I got loads of lumps on my right side & a fabulous bruise acouple of inches wide. It's a bloody awful jab though as not only the needle but the stinging!

alypaly · 03/04/2011 22:31

when i was in hospital in october they gave them in the upper arm...which i questioned as it says in the manufacturers instructions to give into the abdomen. They stung like hell and bruised like hell and took weeks to go.

Casserole · 04/04/2011 09:40

The stinging is horrid. And it takes ages for the bruises to go. You are all hardcore.

tallulah · 04/04/2011 11:59

I can't do it myself. I'm needle-phobic and I just couldn't physically put a needle into myself.

Incidentally the nurse told us to do it on a 40 degree angle, but the instructions say 90 degrees. We tried 90 degrees once and it was so painful that we went back to 40.

I had them during/ after being immobilised during pregnancy with DS. In hospital initially had it done in my tummy but lovely nurse said she thought it was just too cruel to jab pregnant women in the tummy! Thereafter she did it in upper thigh, and after I got home we moved to v. top of buttock, at the side - DH did it as I couldn't bear to! Still stung like buggery but couldn't feel the needle at all, and for some reason could cope better with the sting there than in leg or tummy - it felt more localised somehow. Bruising wasn't too bad either, unlike in tummy where it left me black and blue. I only had them for 2 weeks and dreaded every last one. Good luck:(
