Right, DD 6 mths and I have had about 3 colds since she was born. I only used to get a cold maybe once every few years before. Anyway, another one started a couple of weeks ago. I either caught it off her or vice versa. DD doesn't seem too bothered by her cold which is getting better I think.

Last saturday I woke up with a bad throat and felt rough. By sunday I couldn't talk and I've felt rough all week and had a bad throat/chest and tickly cough. No man flu jokes purlease. I'm not a man btw .

I went out yesterday for the 1st time since Friday and didn't feel too bad. Well today I feel bloody awful again and i'm pretty sure it's flu. I'm all shivery and just had a really hot bath to try and warm up but I don't feel any better.

Right, here's the question. DD is mainly breastfed. She does have a bottle before she goes to bed and the odd one if i'm out. So, because of that, I've only been taking a couple of paracetemol twice a day. DD hasn't been given anything as I don't feel she needs it plus I guess she'll get paracetemol from my milk.

I am concerned that dd will get this latest lot from me and be really poorly. And I want to try and break this cycle as I feel it could just go back and forth between us ad infinitum. Should she be getting antibodies to it from me? And do they give flu jabs to babies? Any suggestions as to what to do, gratefully received.

It is a bit ironic this as last Wednesday I think it was, I rang the RSPB just as a precaution as i've had a couple of dead bird in my garn lately and the garden was a feather massacre. I hope I don't sound neurotic, just thought it was worth a call.

Sorry for the rambling post. I bet you're all thinking, kkkk, can't be that bad. Well, it is, so ner Pre dd days, Id've taken to my pit for a week. Amazing how you manage to keep going isn't it?

Nah,don't fret girl!
Best defence of all for her is to keep on b/feeding.

(How do you think I feel-Ilive in Turkey next to a huge lake where it seems every migratory bird stops for a rest lol!)

DelGirl · 28/10/2005 22:11

Yeah, Im sure its not that but I thought it was quite funny. Thanks
Now theres some birds crowing in a neighbours garden, they sound a bit distressed (shock). I think I should got to bed.

Yes she is getting your antibodies so best to keep feeding and she will be able to fight it off better. Your antibodies are better than any flu jab because she is getting the antibodies specific to the infection.
You can take paracetamol and brufen safely while breastfeeding. I suggest you take them regularly for a couple of days. Paracetamol 1g four- six hourly (max 4g daily) and brufen 400mg six-eight hourly (max 1200mg/day). Once you do that you will feel better. Drink plenty of fluids as well. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Mears . I take it you mean I can take one or the other but not both? Not that I have any brufen here.

When DS1 was little I got every cold going (so did he), in the end I took him to the Dr and complained (LOL ), Dr said that it was good for his immune system and seemed very enthusiastic/almost excited about the whole thing. DS1 is almost 7 and I now have a DS2 and in the last three or four years have had a normal amount of colds, which is a relief for them and myself.

The only thing I would say is watch out, if your DD seems continually ill, don't be fobbed off by Drs. My DS1 was continually ill one winter and I was told it was normal etc, just getting one cold after another until a paediatrician saw him for a speech and language delay, said he had a raging throat infection and was furious that despite my numerous visits to the Dr nobody had taken a swab (one Dr had of course given DS1 antibiotics without knowing what she was trying to treat with them ).

In short IMO loads of colds is fairly normal and unfortunately Mum seems to get them too but trust your instincts, if a cold seems to be neverending ask for some swabs to be taken just in case.

PS I don't believe in bird flu!

mears · 28/10/2005 22:21

No I mean take both interspersed with each other.

mears · 28/10/2005 22:23

eg brufen 8am, 4pm, 10pm

paracetamol 10am, 2pm, 6pm, 10pm or mn.

They can both be taken at same time as they are different family of drugs.

DelGirl · 28/10/2005 22:39

thanks again Mears, you too MrsS

Have you got any lumps or sore bits in your chest? You sound like you could have mastitus, if you are shivery, hot, feverish and you are breat feeding this could be what is making you feel ill. Get down the doctors girl if this is still happening.
