'Fluttering' Heart?

TequilaMockinBird · 30/03/2011 20:55

Over the last couple of weeks my heart has started to 'flutter'. It feels a bit like when a baby first starts to move/kick - like a butterfly type feeling. It flutters for a second or two and then 'thuds' back to normal. This can sometimes go on for about 5-10 minutes.

When it happens (once a day at least), it makes me feel a bit dizzy and sick. Although I realise that I also panic when it happens which probably doesnt help matters!

Any ideas what this could be? I've stupidly googled and have now diagnosed myself with heart failure Shock. Which makes me panic even more!!

The only things I have changed are coming off the pill, and starting to drink coffee again. Could it be either of those causing it?

Just wondered if anybody had experience of this? Or knows what could be causing it before I go to the doctors.

well, I also get the ectopic heartbeat thing - when it goes all funny (feels high in my throat) and then thuds, making me cough - but that doesn't happen very often. And I have had episodes of unexplained racing heartbeat (but only up to about 130bpm lying down). When I do aerobic exercises, especially high impact, my heart rate jumps to 190 very quickly which is not great! So I don't do high impact aerobics. Don't like the thudding in my ears!

Anyway. Hope it gets sorted very quickly and as painlessly as possible and that you don't need to take meds for ever.

Yes GP listened to my heart both yesterday and today. Said it sounds perfectly fine. My pulse was high though but that's because I was so nervous!

Blood pressure was also fine.

It was the ECG results which showed it. Where the lines go up and down on the reading, my 'down' lines don't go straight down like they should, they curve down. Not very easy to explain on here!

Sorry - was a bit behind - have read now about WPW.

just reread and you have it everyday so that would justify taking meds everyday.
youll prob have an echocardigram ,holter to wear at home, treadmill test , bloods and endless ecgs.
has it really just only started? or do they think you were born with it?

After my last 10 yearly bad patch I spent a year on beta blockers and then had an attempted ablation (?) when they put a catheter thing up the vein in your leg and zap a bit of your heart. Only, once I was there they couldn't get my heart to misbehave so they didn't do anything. Turned out the beta blockers were making my heart rhythm worse and I was fine without them. Apart from the falling over once every 10 years obviously; which tbh I can live with. Hope everything turns out fine.

O dear, I've been experiencing this too for the last few months. A missed beat then a fluttering thump - especially bad in the evening, and esp after eating. I was told it could be something to do with thyroid? I was given a slip to go for an ECG but never did - you've inspired me to go next week!

Thought I might have heard today re the urgent appointment the specialist wanted me to have.

Alas, nothing. So that makes me feel a bit better. Surely if it was that serious, they would have contacted me straight away?
