Inadequate smear results....Help!

I had the same problem 3 years ago and it took 3 smear tests, the final one done by the doctor, to get an all clear result. This year the same has happened again. The final test was done by the doctor and although I swear I got the all clear letter, they still seem to think it was an inadequate result. This has happened with two different surgeries and I want to know if this could signal something that maybe wrong with me? I am currently TTC and am very aware of every little twinge and do feel the odd ache and pain in that region. Are they telling the whole truth with inadequate results or is there something else I should know?

Happens to me all the time. It's a question of getting the right mix of cells apparently. If you are prone to being fairly mucous-y, it can interfere with the results, but is not an indication that there is anything wrong with you.

Also, if you go back for a second or third smear too soon after the previous one, your cervix hasn't had time to settle and you won't get the right mix again.

I wouldn't worry. If there were something wrong with you, you'd know about it as the medics can't afford to let such things slip through the net.

Thanks Freckle, though I was alone in having to have loads!

This happens to me every 3 years and I now get referred to the hospital which is great.(not) There they do it in a bigger room with a light on and 2 nurses at the head end to make you feel at ease- yes really.
anyway having had this done twice at hospital ie 5 smears altogether they did finally get a satisfactory one. It is to do with the cells but it is also to do with your cervix and some people have one that is ectropic or something- that's not the right word I know . what it means is that your cervix sticks down a little like a saucer into your vagina and it makes it hard to get a good smear without collecting lots of stuff they don't want which then masks the reslut. So don't read anything too deep into it.

Thanks princesssmartypants, I always new I was special inside! A strange shape doesn't present any problems with ttc and keeping it there (had a m/c in May) does it?

No I am sure it doesn't. Good luck with the ttc. Sorry about the m/c

CountessDracula · 29/10/2005 16:41

yes I had this recently too, apparantly nothing to worry about

i always have trouble with my smears as i have a funny cervix..think its posterior and high or something so always get an inadequate results letter. IF you happen to bleed a little etc then the results are affected.

I get this (in my case it is because I have a retroverted cervix) - I've found that the answer for me is to see our practice nurse and NOT the doctor (never had a result from one done by a doctor, have no idea why) and to go within a week of the end of my period when, apparently, my cervix is in a more normal position and it hurts much less (hurts like F* otherwise).

don't know if any of that would help for you?
