How Long Until My 2nd DD gets Chicken Pox from my 1st DD

On Saturday night my 1st DD (aged 3 years) started getting a runny nose, then couging enough to make her vomit, had a really high fever and very sweaty. By Monday evening her 1st spot appeared on her belly by tuesday morning another two were there and by the afternoon, there were another 3 spots and the doctor confirmed she had chicken pox!

Now I am just sitting and waiting for the first signs from my youngest dd (aged 1 yr) as of yet, there is nothing just a new tooth coming through (great timing hey??? lol). How long does it take for the other sibblings to become infected???

Thanks, Andrea x

My DD got it first (aged 6) then 4 days later DS (then 11 months) got it. He had far more spots than her, but seemed to suffer less (but looked a bugger in his first birthday pics!!!!)

Think the general view is the younger they get it, the better.

Good luck........

Oh, and I painted mine head to toe in calamine lotion!

within a fortnight. be careful, I would disagree with mamaG and say that most 2nd siblings get it far worse than the first, because the 1st has picked it up out and about or at nursery or wherever, whereas the 2nd has a very long exposure from the 1st and can therefore get it much more severely.

my 5.5mth old caught it from his 3 yr old brother - the 3yo had a couple of days of fever and some spots, the 5.5mth old had so many spots you couldn't see skin, high fever for a week and secondary chest infection.

try and limit your dd2s contact with dd1 (impossible I know) and keep a close eye on her when she does get it. good luck!

Soulds like you had a rough time PPH, looks like I was just lucky!

Although DS got far more spots, he didnt really seem to suffer with them.

Andrea, hope all is going OK

ds1 and I got it on the same day (I must have been infected collecting him from nursery). Ds2 then aged 6 months didn't get it at all and still hasn't had it (hes now 3). So you never know.

My DS 6 got it and we waited for DD 1 to get it but suprisingly she never did despite them even sharing a room at the time, so we've still got that to look forward to!

DS1 (3 yr) got chickenpox and it was 2 weeks before DS2 (11 months) came out with it, and he got it much worse. I gave him piriton antihistamine (as well as calamine) as he was so sore all over, much worse than DS1. His fever seemed to go on for ages so I got him checked at the doctor as they can get infections in the open pustules. Four weeks of hell but now it's done and hopefully the scars will fade!

My ds1 got it first and ds2 and dd (dd was aged just 9 months) both got it 13 days later. I would agree that ds2 and dd were more badly affected than ds1. Ds1 had about 50 spots in all whereas ds2 and dd had 50 spots each on one small part of their body, eg their necks or face. That said though, none of my were what you would call ill. Ds2 had a temperature for one afternoon only. Ds1 and dd were a bit itchy. It doesn't have to be bad!

Within a fortnight - My DS (5 mths at the time) caught it from DD (who'd picked it up from nursery) - he was far worse than her - so many spots you could hardly see him!!!!

BUT - I had it when I was 8 and my sister never got them, even thought we shared a bedroom - so you never know!!!!

DS got chicken pox on a Monday and then two weeks to the day (ie this Monday) DD got it. I think incubation period is up to 3 weeks though.

(As DD is only 5 weeks, she may have to have it again some time though )

Thank you all for your replies, very helpful.

My DD1's fever seems to be getting better although she still has a really bad runny nose and horrible cough.
... and.... I sent my dd2 to bed this evening and notice a little bump on her back which looks very much like the 1st spot dd1 got, so i will have to wait and see what lies in store for me tonight. Fingers crossed she'll just have the spots and not be too poorly. Fingers Crossed xx

dd2 will get it within 2 weeks. Just 3 days before our wedding, dd came down with c/pox (albeit mildly). Exactly 2 weeks later ds woke up looking like a spotty teenager
