What is wrong with my knee??

So after the GP and Physio were unhelpful I am consulting the wise MN gurus.

So for the past six or so months I have had a knee issue. If I sit cross legged or cross my legs my right knee starts to hurt and I find it difficult to straighten it. Once it is straight I cannot weight bear properly for a few minutes.

THe pain is somewhat under the kneecap and feels like someone is stabbing me in the knee.

It does not hurt at any other time, Does not collapse under me, is swollen etc. It only hurts when I bend it.

I have had xrays and nothing shows up. Next on the list is an MRI but is that going to show anything?

Any idea what is wrong?

It must be very inconveniencing for you. A colleague too had been suffering from knee and back pain for sometime , and painkillers wasn't doing it for her anymore. She started taking some nutritional supplements and have had amazing results since. She's now able to bend her knee and do things she wasn't able to do for herself.

Not being funny but could it be a bit of arthritis? I have had this in my knee this year and has lasted over 3 months so far ( get it in different areas over different years). You don't have to be old for this, the first time I had it was when I was 17 (in my ankle)! This year it is my knee and it gets worse the more I use it, a lazy day is okay but school runs, runs to playgroup and other places in one day make it really hurt. Going down hill is worse as the bending of the knee at that angle seems to send shockwaves up and down my leg!

It sounds like chondromalacia patellae, a condition in which the cartilage under the kneecap is fraying a bit. It's usually caused by what we call a tracking problem with the kneecap. The patella (knee cap) is keel-shaped on the bottom, and the "keel" travels in a correspondingly-shaped groove. There are four muscles attached to the kneecap tendon, and these make up the quadriceps muscle, at the front of the thigh. Usually a tracking problem occurs when the four muscles of the quadriceps are unequally strong, and pull unevenly on the patella as it runs in it's groove or track. Often either the inside muscle (vastus medialis) is weak and the outside muscle (vastus lateralis) is too tight, or vice versa. Either way, an imbalance like that causes the patella to wobble in its track and the cartilage to start to wear.

Now, I say it's USUALLY a tracking problem, but occasionally I find that the entire quadriceps muscle is simply too tight. So as it's bring used, it's so tight that it's ramming the kneecap into the thigh bone (femur), especially in bent-knee positions held for a long time. Then it takes ages to unwind the quad when you're standing up, and ages to bd able to mobs normally again.

It's worth a try stretching out the quad very diligently, at least once a day, fir several weeks to see if this helps. If it doesn't, it's probably a tracking problem and you need to see a sports-oriented physiotherapist.

Applying alternating ice and heat (5 mins each, repeat a few times) once or twice a day, to the kneecap and the muscle right above it, may help as well.

Flippin' iPhone.

Mobs= move.
It's = its.

And all the other typos.

I have very very tight muscles too, so what you are saying sounds good. As it does not hurt when I walk or move no one will give me a diagnosis.
I will do more stretches and see if that helps. Thanks!!
