baths for teddy bears...

Well - it's related to a health problem
My dd and I have got thrush and we're being treated, but our GP has said that I should wash all of her toys - she has loads and puts them all in her mouth. Solid toys I can spray, but soft toys are going to need the washing machine...
How hot should I do them? None of them have washing instructions other than 'surface wash only', which won't do the trick, so I'll have to chance it in the machine.
My other thought was could I sterilise any without any metal parts in my microwave steriliser? That way they would get hot without becoming sopping wet. Has anyone tried it?
Also - should I treat them now, when we are cured or both? My instinct is to wash everything now and then just restrict her to only playing with the toys I can microwave/spray for the time being, so that I can zap them all every evening until we're better. How does that sound?
Thanks for your help.
Jenny

Dont honestly know if you can hotwash the bears but you need to do something with them. Would it be the end of the world if they were damaged beyond repair on a hot wash?

Thrush is an absolute nightmare isnt it.

It is! It's been going on for a couple of weeks now, but hopefully now that I am being treated systemically I'll stop passing it back to dd - poor thing . Having said that, dd doesn't seem to be in the least bothered by her rash or having any problems feeding, I am the one who is sore.
To be honest, it isn't the end of the world if one or two of her teddies end up somewhat battered - she's got so many given to her as gifts and she's too young to really notice if some go missing. And with Christmas coming up I don't think she'll be short of toys to play with... I just wondered if anyone knew how hot the wash needs to be to be effective. I've washed her cloth nappies and my breast pads at 95 degrees and we're both in paper versions at the moment instead. Was that necessary, or would a 60 degree wash have done as well?

Not with thrush rickman.

It does have to be above 60 jennywren.

It took me 8 weeks to resolve thrush with me and my DS (although only 3 weeks after finally getting treatment)

the fungus for thrush is killed by a weak vinegar / water solution. could you try washing ears in a cup of such and then get the fur sopping wet without soaking the body? just a thought, never tried it myself.

JennyWren · 26/10/2005 00:33

The hot wash it is then...

Anyone have any ideas about the microwave sterilising?

Sorry alux - cross posted. Yes, I could try that too. I have got one particular toy in mind - it's a bear with a rattle attached - Meg loves it but I think the rattle part would probably fill with water and not dry out well.

Well, if anyone ever needs to do this - it had mixed results. Of 8 toys, 3 are really not in a good way, 4 are somewhat smaller versions of their original selves, but otherwise fairly OK, and 1 - thankfully her favourite (a lion with a crinkly mane) appears totally unscathed. I am planning to only give her back the good ones once she's better though, so she'll have to make do with the poorly ones and with her rattles that I can spray, and I'll rotate those and wash them often.

Phew! Not soooo bad then! its such a pita isnt it.

It is a real nuisance - I always have toys scattered around the house and in the changing bag so that wherever we are there is a toy to keep dd amused - and it is a different one to that she played with in the last room, so we keep the novelty factor. On top of it all, I've now had 2 doses fluconazole and probably feel worse rather than better! I hope this doesn't linger too long.
