had a genral for hand surgery on friday, have had a really sore throat since, not like cold sore throat but lower down.
i know its probably from the ET tube as i've lost my voice alittle too. (pain killers even codine don't seem to help)
Its actually more painfull that my hand, how long till it starts to feel better?

this is too long to have a sore throat for after surgery - usually its only a few hours - why not go to your GP

unfitmother · 21/03/2011 19:56

Usual advice is that this can last for a week.
Hope you feel better soon.

Grumpystiltskin · 21/03/2011 19:59

It's not that long, only four days. Do you have a bruise on your hand? A week is about right I agree unfit. If it's not lots better by Weds, maybe see your practice nurse but I'm confident they will say just wait. Not much more they can do really. Hope the op went well though.

my advice only based on personal experience - I am not a healthcare professional

If it were me i would see a GP and take honey drinks in the meanwhile

my hand is swollen but still has a huge bandage dressing on so have yet to see the brusing (my other hand however has a large bruse from the canula).
its amasing how much you can't do when you can't use your domanent hand (toothbrushing for instance is quite a challange lol)
The throat is copable but just very irratating as the painkillers don't help and i'm waking four or five times a night between moving my hand wrong in my sleep and my throat hurting.

I would expect your hand (from cannula, not operation) and throat to heal in a similar fashion and time to be honest, as fatty said, remaining hydrated is important but if you still have a bruise that you can see from the cannula, there will be bruising/abrasion you can't see in your throat from intubation.

If you're worried of course see your GP but it's quite soon to be concerned. Of course, not sleeping well makes you feel pump anyway. Sad

DH had this when he had a surgery on his nose. The tube was ripped out apparently and took a layer of skin with it.
He was advised to buy a throat numbing spray which did work.
