I had one three years ago.
Good points - I'm no longer incontinent at all.
But do have to go to the toilet every few hours - as I don't feel it building up. If I leave it too long, it's suddenly very urgent. There isn't the same feeling with weeing - it's a bit like weeing through the eye of a needle. I need to sit and wait before it comes out. I can never wee fast. I also tend to get UTI's now and again - especially if I'm a bit dehydrated (drinking wine).
I think I was a bit unlucky with mine. I can't remember what the statistic was for people needed "a catheter for a few days after". I had a catheter for 5 weeks - which left me housebound with a baby. We had to go to the hospital every weekend for a trial without catheter - which meant sitting in the waiting room for many hours (11 hours one day).
One thing I didn't find out until the day of the op is that you're not supposed to lift more than the weight of a large potato for a few weeks. This can be difficult if you have a baby to get out of a cot.
Also when they say it takes 4-6 weeks to recover - I didn't believe this but it was true. I wasn't fit to go back to work until 6 weeks after the op.
Having said all that, I think I was a bit unlucky and the good thing is I'm no longer incontinent which is great. I do sometimes wonder if I have these problems because mine was done too tight.
Maybe somebody else will have a more positive story, as I say I think I was one of the unlucky few.
